Girls soccer: Lisle having a season it won't forget

Don't be surprised if Lisle coach Paul Kohorn forgets Saturday morning what he needs for that day's girls soccer sectional final and has to turn around, go home and get it.

Why not? It worked just fine Tuesday.

It turned out a rough start to the day that included being a little late to work wasn't an omen for the Class 1A Lisle sectional semifinal. The Lions continued their fantastic season by cruising past Montini 7-1 at Benedictine University.

"I told the team about it and I said if that's the way it goes, I'm going to do it Saturday too," Kohorn said of the 11 a.m. sectional final. "So I've got to turn around Saturday and come back too."

Lisle is 16-1-2 on the season. It has scored 119 goals and allowed just 13.

"We're on a roll here," Kohorn said. "I mean the whole season's been a roll. I've never had a season like this where both the offense and the defense are just clicking. ... You don't have seasons like this very often, so we're all enjoying it tremendously."

Lisle senior forward Alexa Fasone enjoyed it the most Tuesday. She scored 4 goals and added an assist in the Lions' offensive onslaught. Her speed on through balls down the middle of the field was a difference maker.

"She has a gear that she goes to on occasion that I haven't seen anyone be able to hang with her yet," Kohorn said. "And we've seen some pretty good teams."

Fasone has 33 goals on the season. Chloe Pokorny, McKenzie Weaver and Tara Kane also scored for Lisle.

"Oh, they're good," Montini coach Barry Briggs said. "They're a good team. They were running through us on the wings, coming down the middle. He's got them some real good soccer. They're a quality team."

The Lions are having this success with a starting back line consisting of three sophomores - Gabrielle Sojka, Cassidy Allen and Amanda Duban - and freshman Caitlyn Sojka. Yet the Lions didn't allow a goal until the Shea Smith connected on a 23-yard blast in the 62nd minute to make the score 6-1.

"A couple of them are stepping up as leaders. I mean, Gabby's doing a great job. She's the vocal leader back there and she does a real nice job with the defense. And the rest of the girls, this team has really bonded and they're not only good players but they're good friends, and that really helps."
