Softball: Barrington brings best to Easter tourney

After a loss to Palatine earlier in the week, Barrington's softball team may not win a Mid-Suburban West championship for the first time in three years.

But the Fillies didn't have to wait long to win another championship on Saturday.

With a 6-2 win over Class 3A Ottawa (19-5-1) and a 6-0 triumph over Class 2A Tri-City (26-2), Class 4A Barrington (25-4) earned the overall title of its third annual Greg Easter Tournament (16 teams, four classes) at the Fields of Dreams.

Both games went six innings due to the 1½-hour time limit.

Barrington senior and Northwestern recruit Kendall Peterson led off the top of the third inning against Ottawa with her 11th homer of the season.

The left field blast was off University of Kentucky recruit Sloan Gayan, who also happens to be Peterson's teammate in summer softball.

Senior Gina Magro's double was the Fillies' only other extra base hit in the game.

Sophomore Jackie Albrecht raised her record to 9-0, tossing a 3-hitter.

Against Tri-City, the Fillies did all their scoring in the first inning.

They loaded the bases with no outs and Tori Meyer cleared them with a triple to left field.

Meyer (4-1) went on to throw a 7-hitter.

Katherine Stagnito added a triple for Barrington while Brynn Nevers and Magro added doubles.

Prospect 18, Wheeling 4 (5 inn.): Amanda Pinter belted 2 home runs and went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI to lead the offense for host Prospect (8-14, 5-9) in the MSL East contest.

Other multiple hitters were Cassie Cunniff (4-for-5, 2B), Adeline Wantuch (3-for-4, 3 2B) and Kathryn Annen (4-for-4, 3 2B).

Emalee Depa and Madeline Borkowski also had doubles while Depa earned the win, striking out nine while tossing a 4-hitter.

Nikki Ferraro (2-for-2) belted a home run for Wheeling (3-18, 1-14) while teammate Peyton LaCaeyse doubled.

Elk Grove 12, Metea Valley 0 (6 inn.): Visiting Elk Grove hit the 50 mark for home runs as team leader AJ Trausch (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 3 runs) clicked for her 15th and 16th in the nonconference game.

Winning pitcher Olivia Masnica (7-2) also belted one over the fence while going 2-for-3 with 2 runs.

Other multiple hitters for the Grens (22-7) were Katia Pendowski (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 2B), Jaimie Klicka (2-for-4, 2B) and Lauren Clausen (2-for-3, 3B). Taylor Schulz and Grace Engwall also had hits for EG.

Masnica threw a 3-hitter with 4 strikeouts.

Fremd 6, Glenbard West 4: Cali DiVito went 3-for-4 with a home run and double and the sophomore scored 3 runs for the Vikings (16-7) in the nonconference game.

Also belting a home run was teammate Kelsey Brauer (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 2 runs).

Sophomore Grace Hiller went the first 4⅔ innings, striking out 4 and allowing 4 this. Hailey Hazlett and Grace Dudley closed out the game.

Hersey 9, Evanston 6: Visiting Hersey ran its record to 19-5 as senior Brianna Luciano (10-3) picked up the win and also went 2-for-5 with a double in the nonconference game.

Also collecting multiple hits for Hersey were Makayla Tsagalis (2-for-5) and Ria Patel (3-for-5), who made her season pitching debut in the final two innings.

Savannah Gazda, who pitched the middle innings, also had a double along with Sarah Bailitz.

Maine West 9, Schaumburg 8: Abbie Greenberg's walk-off hit gave completed a 5-run bottom of the seventh for Schaumburg (11-17), which received a home run from Tiffani Rudnick and a double from Jordan Karson.

Multiple hitters for the hosts were Nikki Kolodziej (2-for-2) and Talia Torosian (2-for-4, 2 runs) in the nonconference game.

Morgan Miller earned the win striking out three in the final three innings. Starter Lauren Nielsen struck out six.

Abby Gawlinski struck out 10 for Maine West (13-10) which was led on offense by Gabbi Demma (2-for-4), Ashley Desilva (3-for-3, HR, 4 runs), Brianna Torres (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Brianna Migaczewski (triple).

Hoffman Estates 10, Proviso West 0 (6 inn): Gracie Velazquez (2-for-4, 2 runs 2B), Jayleen Suarez (2-for-2, 2 RBI), Yaya Nieves (2-for-4, 2B), Ayanna Ward (2B) and Brianna Venegas (2B) paced the offense for host Hoffman Estates (2-24).

Emily Gross tossed a 4-hitter with 7 strikeouts in nonconference game.

Marist 18, St. Viator 0 (4 inn): Junior Morgan Bielfeldt and freshman Cassidy Gibson had the only hits for St. Viator (5-15, 1-8) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.
