Girls soccer: Warren, Maine South play to a scoreless draw

The girls soccer postseason sits right around the corner and it's a good time to get players healthy.

Warren's Emily Soriaga made her return after missing the field for over two weeks with an ankle injury.

The sophomore midfielder suffered the injury in the opening game of the Glenbrook Cup against Rockford Lutheran.

"It felt a little bit sore but I pursue the pain, because I really want to get better," Soriaga said. "It felt good to come back. It made me happy and the rest of the team. Watching the team it made me happy, but watching, it wanted me back out there with them. I think it does help the team being on the field."

Warren (10-8-3) played a pretty good 80 minutes on the road and settled with a scoreless draw against competitive Maine South (14-4-3) in a nonconference matchup in Park Ridge on Thursday night.

"I really didn't want anybody to get hurt," Warren coach Ryan McCabe said. "That's been my feeling over the last couple of games. I thought we played a pretty good game and played a better second half than the first half. We were trying some stuff out to run through some scenarios getting us ready for the postseason. We were able to run through that stuff and be better prepared for next week."

The Blue Devils finish the regular season at Deerfield on Friday and open the postseason in the Class 3A Libertyville regional taking on North Suburban Conference rival Mundelein on Tuesday night.

On Thursday, Warren got a combined shutout from Alana Turner (3 saves) and Sarah Barbosa (4).

The Hawks had come off playing and getting victories over Deerfield 4-1 on Tuesday night and Riverside-Brookfield 2-0 on Wednesday.

"It's been a barnburner lately," Maine South coach JJ Crawford said. "We didn't look good (against Riverside-Brookfield), but we looked good here against Warren. It was a great game and a great tuneup for the postseason. Going 0-0, it doesn't bother me as long as we got a good game except for finishing. Obviously, we need to finish but every other aspect of the game is right there for the playoffs."

Amy Hartjen had a clean sheet making 4 stops in goal for Maine South. The Hawks played the match without starting keeper Francesca Faraci. She missed the match because of an injured quad.

Maine South opens its Class 3A regional play at Loyola Academy against Leyden on Tuesday night.
