Baseball: Nowicki, Barrington knock off Elk Grove

Friday's showdown between the Mid-Suburban League baseball division leaders turned into the R.J. Nowicki show.

The Barrington junior stymied Elk Grove with a 3-hitter that included 5 strikeouts as the Broncos won 7-0 to stay one game ahead of Fremd and Palatine in the loss column in the MSL West standings.

Rayth Petersen had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Barrington (19-5, 9-2) offense, which also took advantage of 8 walks from the Elk Grove (10-9, 7-3) pitching staff.

Will Koehler added 2 hits and an RBI for the Broncos.

Fremd 2, Prospect 1: Austin Higgins singled then scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning for Fremd (12-9, 7-3) in this MSL crossover. Brent Swenson had an RBI for the Vikings and Ed Brancato drove in a run for Prospect (9-12-1, 4-6). Victor Fujiu picked up the win for Fremd, throwing five innings in relief and striking out eight. Tyler Priessing suffered the loss for the Knights despite allowing just 3 hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Hersey 14, Conant 2: James Denten threw a six-inning 1-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks and added 2 double and 4 RBI with his bat as Hersey (12-10, 5-5) won the MSL crossover. AJ Ceffilio (3 hits), Daniel Clawson (2 RBI), Dan Kubsik (3 RBI), Luke Picchiotti (3 hits, 2 doubles, RBI) and Trey Schmidt (3 hits, 3 RBI) also contributed for the Huskies. Teague Conrad had the only hit for Conant (7-16, 3-6).

Buffalo Grove 5, Schaumburg 3: Alex Paul tripled and scored the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh inning on a single by Riku Komatani as the Bison (14-7, 6-4) won the MSL crossover. Mark Antonetti pitched 3⅓ innings in relief for the win. Jason Akers and Yuki Sato had RBI for the Saxons (8-12, 4-6).

Palatine 8, Wheeling 2: Jacons Holmstrom had 2 hits and 2 RBI and Jake Andersen added a double and an RBI for Palatine (14-10-1, 7-3), which also benefited from 7 walks in the MSL crossover. Josh Stitt went six innings for the Pirates, allowing 4 hits with 14 strikeouts and 1 walk. Jeremy Kim had 2 hits for Wheeling (10-11, 5-6).

Libertyville 7, St. Viator 4: Casey Kmet (2 hits, 2B, RBI), Kevin Wilhite (2 hits), Joe Brunetti (2 hits, RBI), Casey Hintz (2B, 2 RBI) and Conor Warner (2B) led St. Viator (12-9) in its nonconference loss.

Maine West 5, Vernon Hills 3: Emmett Olson had 2 hits with a double and Enrique Melendez added a double for Maine West (9-10-1) in a Central Suburban League win. Vince Parcelli picked up the win in relief for the Warriors.
