Girls track and field: No catching Miles, West Aurora

The 43rd annual Kane County girls track and field meet could have easily been named the Dajour Miles Invitational.

The West Aurora senior simply dominated Friday night at Burlington Central.

Miles won 3 events to lead the Blackhawks to the team title with 123 points. Batavia was second with 101 points.

The Kentucky-bound senior won the 100 in county record time of 12.07, claimed the 200 in a clocking of 24.91 and won the 400 in 58.84.

Miles repeated as champion in all 3 events.

"I felt confident coming into the meet," said Miles. "I put a lot of work into these events. I have a lot of work to do. I just want to get points and help the team win."

Miles received plenty of help from her teammates.

Victoria Spagnola swept the hurdles winning the 100 (15.16) and 300 (46.94).

Abigail Kuhn won the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet. Megan Gasparaitis of Burlington Central placed second (10-6).

"I knew I had to vault well to win," said Kuhn. "I was trying a new pole and I felt comfortable with it. I worked hard in the off-season and I am more well prepared this season. I was able to use the cross wind to my advantage. I feel good going into the conference (Upstate Eight) meet next week."

West Aurora claimed the 400 relay in 50.12.

Batavia's second place effort was helped by a win in the 800 by Katrina Schlenker (2:17.27).

"My plan was to take the lead at the 300 meter mark," said Schlenker. "I executed my plan well."

Batavia's Amy Zabka joined Schlenker in the winners circle with a county title in the shot put (39-3½).The Bulldogs won the 1,600 (4:07.55) and the 3,200 relays (9:27.75).

Geneva was third with 80 points.

The Vikings were led by Sophia McDonnell who repeated as 1,600 champion with a time of 5:02.62.

"My goal was to repeat as county champion," said McDonnell. "It is super exciting. I took the lead when I wanted to and had enough left at the end."

Central, paced by a first place effort in the long jump from Fiona Pedone (17-5½), finished fourth with 72 points.

St. Charles East was fifth with 68 points. The Saints won the 800 relay in a time of 1:47.78.

St. Charles North, with first place finishes by Kayla Mikottis in the discus (127-4) and Natalie Buratczuk (high jump, 5-1), placed sixth with 61.5 points.

Rosary was seventh with 45.5 points. Ann Molenhouse finished in the winners circle for the Royals in the triple jump (34-feet).

South Elgin's Naomi Ruff was first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:32.74 as the Storm finished eighth with 36 points.
