Girls lacrosse: Huntley doubles up Geneva

Solid goalkeeping along with a potent offense.

Those ingredients were good enough to produce an 8-4 Huntley win over Geneva in nonconference girls lacrosse action in Huntley Wednesday night.

"This was by far our best game of thee season," said Huntley coach Tony Nigro. "We played lights out for two halves. On offense, we did a great job of possessing the ball and we worked for good shots. It was a good team effort and I am very happy for the girls."

The offensive star for the Red Raiders was Taylor Wentz, who scored 4 goals, 3 in the first half.

"We got the lead early and it is much easier to play with the lead than play from behind," said Wentz. "I was able to find my spots to get open shots. It is all about moving at all times. This was our best game of the season. Everybody was playing so well together and we had great teamwork."

Nigro praised Wentz.

"She is an outstanding goal scorer and has been consistent all season," said Nigro. "Taylor finds a way to get her shot and score goals. She got us going early and set the tone for our team."

Kaz Black was outstanding in goal for the Red Raiders (6-5) with 19 saves.

"Kaz was working her magic tonight," said Nigro. "She was making all the saves. Some of them were really tough shots."

Isabella Wiechec added 2 goals for the winners while Katie Brown and Patrycja Waltos each scored once.

With Wentz scoring 3 times, the Red Raiders led 4-1 after 25 minutes. Brown scored the fourth goal for the Red Raiders in the first half while Grace Sowers scored the lone goal for the Vikings (2-4) in the first half.

With Wiechec and Wentz scoring to start the second half, the Red Raiders mounted an insurmountable 6-1 lead with 17:53 remaining in the contest.

The Vikings scored 2 late goals, 1 each by Alysson Davidson and Sowers, who scored 3 of her team's 4 goals. Goalkeeper Taylor Berg had 10 saves for the Vikes.

"We played with much more fire and aggressiveness in the second half," said Geneva coach Kailey Robbins. "We capitalized on our opportunities in the second half and got more quality shots in the second half. We really got on them at halftime to play with fire and passion and they did. They played like they wanted to win. We have had trouble starting games this season. We haven't come ready to play. We need to do a better job of playing two complete halves."
