Baseball: Stevenson hands Mundelein first NSC loss

Stevenson's baseball team built an early lead and held on for a 4-3 win over host Mundelein on Monday, handing the Mustangs their first loss in North Suburban Conference action.

Chris Farina and Drew Ruchim were both 2-for-3 for the Patriots (12-5, 5-2), who led 4-0 after three innings against Mundelein ace Jonathan Hanscom. Hayden Brotz allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over 5 innings and earned the win, while Nick Wang pitched the sixth and seventh for the save. Farina, Michael D'Angelo and Jake Surane all doubled for Stevenson.

Mundelein (10-7, 6-1) got a double from Justin Binz, while Jared Dorfman was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hanscom struck out 11 and walked one in a complete-game effort.

Warren 16, Zion-Benton 4: Mikey Kocen was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and 4 RBI in the North Suburban Conference game, and the visiting Blue Devils won their 15th in a row.

Nate Rentas homered and went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI for Warren (18-2, 6-0). Bradley Vondruska was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Brandon Houtz finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. The Blue Devils also got a triple from Casey Cobe.

Kyle Duenas improved to 4-0.

Libertyville 7, Lake Zurich 3: Andrew Kim and Derek Calamari were both 2-for-3, and the host Wildcats scored 4 unearned runs in 4 innings against Bears ace Noah DeLuga in the North Suburban Conference game.

Kim, Dylan Drumke (2-for-4), Tanner Kelly and Brendan King all doubled for Libertyville (11-9, 4-3). Sam Paden drove in 2 runs, and Ryan Klainos pitched 5⅓ innings for the win, allowing 3 runs, striking out four and walking four.

Lake Zurich (11-6, 4-3) got a homer and 3 RBI from Jack Pfeifer and a double from Tyler Snep.

Vernon Hills 11, Maine East 3: In a continuation of a suspended game from last Thursday, the Cougars put up 6 runs in the top of the seventh to seal the Central Suburban League victory.

Quinn Geren started the one-out rally. Alex Yu, Ethan Bowers and Danny Wizceb all had hits and RBI in the inning. Josh Liu also doubled.

Vernon Hills improved to 10-7 and 2-3 in the CSL.

Lakes 20, Wauconda 7 (susp.): The Northern Lake County Conference game was suspended due to inclement weather after three innings.

The game will be finished at a later time.

Lakes scored 12 runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles have 2 hits apiece from Chance Andell, Carson Cobb, Ethan Clark and Logan Mueller. Ethan Mackey, Jason Volpe and Mueller all have doubles, while Alex Huissen and Cobb each have 3 RBI.

Wauconda has 2 hits from Tyler Heinz.

Marist 9, Carmel 2: The host Corsairs managed just 3 singles in their East Suburban Catholic Conference loss.

Drew Wiegman was 1-for-2 with a walk for Carmel (9-3, 5-2).
