Softball: Crystal Lake South wins three more to stay unbeaten
Crystal Lake South scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and beat Johnsburg 8-5 on Saturday, keeping its perfect record intact.
The Gators (17-0) followed with a 13-0 win over Woodstock North and 21-0 victory over Portage, Ind.
Against Johnsburg, after the first two hitters in the sixth were retired, Brooke Kuffel started the rally with a single. Alexis Pupillo also scored, and Kuffel scored the go-ahead run when Johnsburg couldn't handle Emily Sulikowski's hard ground ball.
Christina Toniolo and Baylee Kassel singled in insurance runs.
Kuffel went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Kassel had 2 hits and drove in 3 while Maddie Bush was 2-for-4.
Toniolo earned the win in relief of Alyssa Niketopoulos, striking out 4 and allowing no hits in her two scoreless innings.
Jessica Gwizdak smashed a 3-run home run against Woodstock North. Pupillo went 4-for-4, and Toniolo and Kuffel both pitched 3 shutout innings.
Those same two combined for a 4-inning shutout against Portage. Sulikowski smashed 2 home runs and had 9 RBI while Pupillo went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and Niketopoulos was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI.
Aurora Central Catholic 12, Plano 0: Dani Brown tossed a 6-inning no-hitter, striking out 11. Lizzie Albert went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI, and Izzy Hernandez went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
The teams played again with a similar outcome as the Chargers won 18-1 to improve to 19-2. Alheli Velazquez homered, Casey Feltes was 2-for-2 with 4 RBI, and Brown went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
South Elgin sweeps Wheaton North: The Storm (14-5) scored six runs in the second inning to give starter Sophia Salazar some breathing room, and she responded by allowing just 1 earned run in 6 innings, striking out seven of a 10-2 win.
Pollman also had a big day at the plate going 3-for-3 with 4 runs. McKenna Eichholz had 3 hits as well while driving in 7 including a grand slam.
Sami Koss was the third Storm player with 3 hits; Sammy Jimenez and Cara Cruthers both added 2 hits.
South Elgin completed the sweep with a 6-5 win. Sidney Strama pitched 6 innings for the win, striking out seven. Pollman struck out the side in the seventh.
Sammy Jimenez led the offense going 3-for-3 while Maria Schiffer had 2 RBI.
Cary-Grove splits with St. Charles North: The Trojans (7-6) won the first game 2-1 behind Emma Hill, who held the North Stars to 4 hits while striking out six. Kelly Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and RBI. No other player on either team had more than 1 hit.
St. Charles North (4-5) bounced back with a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Anastasia Pappas pitched the first six innings, scattering 7 hits while striking out five. Gracee Ellis pitched the seventh for the save. Molly Heaton drove in 2 runs, and Sydney Eby went 1-for-4 with 2 runs scored.
Johnson had another big game for Cary-Grove with 3 hits. Jazz Flashing went 2-for-3.
