Baseball: Pitching delivers in sweep for Lake Zurich

James Piggott pitched a complete game, and Lake Zurich edged visiting Schaumburg 3-2 in Game 1 of a nonconference baseball doubleheader Saturday.

The Bears then completed the sweep, winning 1-0 and improving to 11-5 as Cameron Orgeron and Michael Gallus combined on a 5-hit shutout.

Piggott allowed 7 hits, struck out five and walked one. Anthony Mangano was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Bears.

In Game 2, Jack Pfeifer drove in Jack Moses (1-for-3) for the game's only run. Sam Holtz was 2-for-3 for Lake Zurich. Orgeron allowed 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and 4 walks in 5 innings. Gallus threw 1-hit ball over 2 innings, striking out three and not walking a batter.

Vernon Hills 4, Reavis 0: Jack Peterson allowed 3 hits in 4 innings to earn the win in his first start of the year, as the visiting Cougars earned the shutout at Ron Czarnecki Field in Burbank.

Josh Liu relieved Peterson and threw 3 scoreless innings. Both pitchers were supported by errorless defense.

Liu was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. Quinn Geren had a double and an RBI, and Caleb Thomson was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Vernon Hills (9-7). Brendan Holloway was on base three times and scored twice.

Wauconda 6, Hononegah 5: The Bulldogs scored a walk-off win thanks to Marcus Keller's double in the seventh inning of the nonconference game.

Anthony Bonk (double) and Keller were both 2-for-3 for Wauconda (7-8). Riley Kirk had 2 RBI, and both Camden Janik and Brett Winkel doubled.

Stevenson 9, Romeoville 2: Hayden Brotz went 3-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBI, Chris Farina was 3-for-4 with a double, and the host Patriots won the nonconference game.

Six pitchers combined on a 3-hitter for Stevenson (11-5). Eli Fishbein had 3 strikeouts in 2 innings to earn the win. Brandon Ward was 2-for-3 with a double for the Patriots, and Joey Little had a single and 3 RBI.

Buffalo Grove 3, Grayslake North 1: Jeremy Rowder singled and drove in a run, and Brandon Legg doubled for the Knights in their nonconference loss.

Grayslake North's Jason Donohue went the distance on the mound, allowing 3 hits.

Libertyville 9, Hoffman Estates 2: Dylan Drumke had a home run and 2 RBI, and sophomore Connor Lockwood allowed 1 unearned run and 3 hits in 4 innings with 3 strikeouts for the visiting Wildcats in the nonconference game.

Tanner Kelly was 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and 2 stolen bases for Libertyville. The Wildcats' other offensive contributors included Cole Fiorenza (2-for-2), Sam Paden (2-for-4) and Garrison Bennett (2-for-3).

Grayslake Central 5, Richmond-Burton 4 (8 innings): The Rams scored twice in the seventh to force extra innings and plated the winning run in the eighth thanks to an error in the nonconference game.

Eric Sturm allowed 1 run and struck out four in 4 innings for Grayslake Central. Ethan Peterson pitched 2 innings in relief and earned the win. The Rams were led offensively by Daniel Rogers, who went 2-for-2 with 2 walks. Alex Berry had a double, as Grayslake Central improved to 13-3.
