Softball: Barrington wins three games in Washington

In four games at the downstate Washington softball tournament on Thursday and Friday, Barrington was the home team each time after winning the coin flip.

And the Fillies made themselves right at home on Friday, winning three straight games after falling 13-3 on Thursday to Kaneland.

The Daily Herald's top-ranked team (13-2) was not to be denied on Friday, defeating Brimfield (No. 12 in Class 2A), Washington (receiving votes in Class 3A) and Pontiac (No. 2 in Class 3A).

It marked the first time in hall of fame coach Perry Peterson's career that his team won three games in one day.

"I don't know if we've ever even played three in one day," the 27th year Barrington coach said.

The first one was a 7-0 win over Brimfield as sophomore Jackie Albrecht tossed a 2-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

Kendall Peterson (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Gina Magro (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Leyden Atlas (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Sydney Granby (2B) led the offense.

The middle game was a 4-3 triumph over the host Panthers (12-4) and ended in dramatic fashion.

The Fillies were down 3-2 with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Patty Lidbury sent a walk-off double to right center field scoring Peterson and Brynn Nevers with the tying and winning runs. It was Lidbury's third career hit and second extra base hit (the other was a home run).

Peterson ended up 3-for-4 in the game while Kat Stagnito and Atlas each went 2-for-3.

Senior Barbara Covek (3 strikeouts) pitched the first 6⅓ innings while Albrecht went the final ⅔ to pick up the win, getting a pair of strikeouts.

Albrecht (4-0) picked up her third win of the day when the Fillies closed out the tourney with a 3-0 shutout over Pontiac (16-2), which entered the week at 11-0 and ranked no. 33 nationally by FloSoftball.com.

Facing Illinois State recruit Amanda Fox, the Fillies had 4 hits, including Peterson's 2-run homer over the left field fence which made it 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

It was the senior third baseman's eighth homer of the season and scored Stagnito who led off the inning by reaching on an error.

Stagnito also scored the Fillies' first run on an RBI single from Atlas (2-for-3) in the first inning.
