Softball: Freedman gives Stevenson walk-off win

Emily Freedman's 2-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Stevenson a 15-14, walk-off win over Glenbrook South in nonconference softball action Wednesday.

Freedman also tripled twice and finished 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. Stevenson (3-3) got home runs from Hailey Barnes (3-for-3, double), Anna Fossier (4-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and Lexi Gitler (1-for-3, 2 RBI). Maggie Trotter was 3-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI. Elle Ruchim went 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, as the Patriots pounded out 17 hits.

Carmel 8, Grant 4: Winning pitcher Marla Walinski was 2-for-2 with a double, Kyla Rapplean had a single and 2 RBI, and the host Corsairs won the nonconference game to improve to 8-5.

Walinski pitched all 7 innings, striking out four, walking two and allowing 4 hits.

Grayslake North 14, Zion-Benton 3: The host Knights won the nonconference matchup in a repeat of last year's regional semifinal.

Grayslake North (12-7) pounded out 17 hits. Sophomore Shannon Hill hit (2-for-3, 3 RBI) hit her first varsity home run, a solo shot in the second inning. She followed with her second homer, a 2-run shot in the fourth. Faith Standerski (3-for-4, 2 RBI) hit her fifth home run of the season and ended a double shy of the cycle. Grace Brown (3-for-3, 2 doubles) hit 2 balls off the fence. Nicole Hughes (3-for-3, RBI), Alyssa Carr (1-for-2, 2 RBI), Jess Pozezinski (1-for-2, RBI), Ashton Moore (1-for-2, 3 RBI), Scout Kram (1-for-3, double), Caitlin Barenbaum (1-for-1, double) and birthday-girl Meghan Delahunty (1-for-4, double, RBI) all had hits for the Knights.

Evan Garrett picked up the victory in relief throwing 4⅔ innings, not giving up a run, striking out five and scattering 3 hits without walking a batter.

For the Zee-Bees, Emma Roberts (1-for-2, 2 RBI) blasted an opposite-field shot in the first. Alyssa Rancher (2-for-3), Ashley Zappa (1-for-1, double) and Anjeli Calderon (1-for-2) all had hits for Zion-Benton.
