Baseball: Elk Grove tops Wheeling to take MSL East lead

Elk Grove took over sole possession of first place in the Mid-Suburban League East Division baseball race with a 4-0 win over Wheeling Wednesday.

The Grens improve to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the MSL East. Elk Grove entered the day in a tie with Buffalo Grove and Wheeling, which both lost and dropped to 3-2 in the division.

Elk Grove got off to a fast starting, going up 2-0 on Wheeling (8-8 overall) after the first inning.

The Grens rolled up 9 total hits, led by Zach Schwartz (2 hits, 3B) and Joey Gaskill (2 hits, 2B). Nick Hofmann and Xander Rojahn each had 2 hits as well.

Winning pitcher Ryne Singsank struck out 10 over seven innings. He also allowed only 3 walks.

Michael Best led Wheeling with a double.

Prospect 15, Buffalo Grove 2: Prospect (7-8-1, 2-3) put up a whopping 18 hits and was in control early, up 7-2 after three innings. Matt McAleer had himself a day. He had 3 hits, all of them home runs, he scored 3 runs and drove in an eye-popping 7 runs. He was also the winning pitcher with 6 strikeouts over six innings. Ed Brancato (5-for-5, 4 R, 3 RBI, 2 doubles, HR) also had a big day while Ethan Burgh and Kevin Donohue also had 3 hits apiece. Burgh drove in 3 runs as well. For Buffalo Grove (9-5m 3-2), Matt Brunelli drove in 2 runs and had a double.

Hersey 14, Rolling Meadows 1: A 6-run first inning paved the way to a big day for Hersey. The Huskies (9-7, 3-2 MSL East) were up 7-0 after two innings and pounded out 10 hits on the game. Winning pitcher Hunter Luke had a big day with 5 strikeouts and no walks over five innings while also helping himself at the plate with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Daniel Clawson (2 hits), Will Adamski (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Ryan Trachsel (4 RBI) also had big days at the plate for Hersey. For Rolling Meadows (2-11, 0-5), Jacob Johnson-Wright and Sean Nolan each had 2 hits while Joe Marcucci drove in the only run.

Barrington 11, Hoffman Estates 1: Barrington (14-3, 4-1 MSL West) had two big innings, scoring 5 runs in the third inning and 6 runs in the fourth inning. Max Raynor (HR, 4 RBI) and Will Koehler (2 hits, 2B, 2 RBI) both had big days at the plate. Winning pitcher RJ Nowicki had 2 strikeouts and just 1 walk over five innings pitched. For Hoffman Estates (1-12-2, 0-4), Kyle Krogstad drove in the only run.

Conant 13, Schaumburg 1: Keegan Brandt keyed a big offensive day for Conant (4-12, 1-4 MSL West). Brandt had 4 hits, three of which were doubles. Kevin Polaski (2 hits) and Nick Anzelone (2 RBI) also came up big at the plate. Winning pitcher Lukas Kim had 8 strikeouts for Conant. Schaumburg drops to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the MSL West.

Maine West 3, Niles North 2: Maine West (7-7-1) scored all three of its runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for the win. Anthony Salemi, David Roscoe (2 hits) and Emmett Olson all drove in runs for the Warriors. Winning pitcher Nick Hernandez racked up 8 strikeouts and had no walks over six innings for Maine West.
