Softball: Pyburn's grand slam lifts Antioch
Abby Pyburn hit a grand slam in the first inning, and Antioch's softball team beat host Grant 6-1 in Northern Lake County Conference action Tuesday.
Pyburn's homer came on a full count with one out, giving the Sequoits (8-0-1, 2-0) and pitcher Jeri Bonaguidi the only runs they needed. Piper Foote was 2-for-4 for Antioch. Bonaguidi went the distance in the circle, allowing no earned runs, striking out six and walking one.
Calista Warmowski was 2-for-3 for Grant, which also got a double from Miranda Rodriguez.
Grayslake Central 9, Crystal Lake Central 5: Rachel Smigielski hit a grand slam, doubled and drove in 5 runs for the Rams in the nonconference game.
Grayslake Central (9-2) received multiple hits as well from Elisa Koshy, winning pitcher Grace Bradley and Bridget Marshall.
Vernon Hills 10, Highland Park 0: Madison Johnson went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases, as the Cougars won their Central Suburban League North Division opener.
Vernon Hills (4-5) also got 2-for-4 efforts from Delaney Bowen (double, 2 stolen bases) and Quin Yuter (triple, stolen base).
Grayslake North 9, Round Lake 0: Faith Standerski led the way for the Knights in the Northern Lake County Conference game, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Nina Wittig (1-for-2, 2 RBI, walk) and Evan Garrett (1-for-2, walk, hit by pitch) also had hits for Grayslake North (7-6, 2-1). Nicole Hughes had 2 RBI, and Grace Moats picked up the other RBI for the Knights. Scout Kram (1-0) picked up the shutout victory, scattering 4 hits to go along with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Lilly Larson (2-for-3), Emily Etherington (1-for-2, walk) and Michele Lauritzen (1-for-3) all had hits for the Panthers. Freshman Kaitlyn DeNapoli also drew a walk.
