Crystal Lake South grad Fanter earns multiple All-American honors

Crystal Lake South graduate Chanel Fanter is racking up the postseason accolades.

Fanter, a junior at Saint Xavier in Chicago, recently earned her second all-American award in as many days. The forward was named to the NAIA Division II women's basketball All-Americna team as an honorable mention pick.

Fanter finished the season third in the CCAC in scoring, averaging a team-high 18.9 points per game for the Cougars, who hit the 20-win mark for the 19th year in a row. She finished second in NAIA Division II with 84 blocked shots and led Saint Xavier in rebounding at 8.3 per game.

Fanter also was named to the WBCA NAIA all-American honorable-mention team. She's the fifth Saint Xavier player to earn both WBCA and NAIA all-American honors in the same season. She's the 15th Saint Xavier NAIA all-American selection.

Peterson at UW-Oshkosh: In his freshman season, Batavia graduate Eric Peterson was a contributor to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Division III national-championship basketball team.

UWO downed Swarthmore College 96-82 at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana to win the national title. UWO was in the NCAA Division III final for the second year in a row.

Peterson logged 16 minutes in the title tilt and scored 1 point and grabbed a rebound. On the season, Peterson played in all 32 games and averaged 20.4 minutes of playing time. Peterson averaged 2.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per contest, while shooting .382 from the field and .306 from the 3-point line.

McCloughan at Saint Xavier: And more from Saint Xavier where Geneva product Janie McCloughan finished up her senior basketball season. She transferred her junior year from the University of Southern Indiana.

This season, McCloughan averaged 5.7 points per contest to go with 3.8 rebounds, 29 assists, 14 steals and 6 blocked shots. She played in 31 games and started 20, averaging 17.3 minutes of action per contest. McCloughan shot .449 from the field (75-for-167) and .355 from the 3-point line (11-for-31) for a Saint Xavier team that went 21-10.

McCloughan has been admitted into the graduate program at Saint Xavier for speech and language pathology and is debating using her freshman redshirt year to play an additional season.

McCloughan's younger sister, Kelly, plays basketball and runs track at Geneva.

Origer honored: Dundee-Crown graduate and Algonquin resident Deanna Origer had quite the first week to her softball season. Origer is a freshman third baseman at the University of Dubuque, which plays in the American Rivers Conference.

Origer was named the ARC female athlete of the week in the softball-position-player category.

During the award week, Origer helped the Spartans to an 8-1 record by hitting .533 with 16 hits in 30 at-bats. Those 16 hits included 3 doubles and 3 triples. She struck out just once and had an on-base percentage of .559 and a slugging percentage of .833. Origer also drove in 13 runs and scored 10 runs.

In a 4-1 win over Gordon, she was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. She also was 1-for-3 with a double in a 5-0 loss to Northwestern-St. Paul.

Origer started to heat up in a 9-3 win over Utica where she went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. In a 4-0 win over Lakeland, she went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

In a 7-1 win over Lasell, Origer was 3-for-3 with a walk and 3 runs scored. In an 11-1 win against Maywood, she went 3-for-5 with a triple and 4 RBI to go with 2 runs scored.

In a 9-1 win against Wheaton College, Origer went 2-for-2 with a walk and 2 RBI. In a 9-0 win against Pittsburg-Greensburg, Origer was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. She closed out spring-break week by going 1-for-4 with a triple, 4 RBI and a run scored in Dubuque's 7-5 win against Marietta.

Shields at Loyola: Huntley alum Jess Shields is off to a hot start on the softball diamond for Loyola-Chicago. Shields, who transferred from UW-Parkside, is leading the Missouri Valley Conference in stolen bases by a healthy margin. Through midweek, Shields had 30 stolen bases in 39 attempts. The next closet to Shields has 19 stolen bases.

In 30 games (all starts), Shields is batting .385 with 37 hits in 96 at-bats. She has scored 29 runs and has 4 doubles, 3 RBI and 17 walks to her credit.

Shields is ninth in the MVC in batting average, tied for seventh in hits and 10th in the league in on-base percentage at .468.

Loyola is 17-14 overall and 1-8 in MVC action.
