Baseball: Best's game-winning hit lifts Wheeling past Maine East

Michael Best's single scored Rohin Shah with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday as Wheeling's baseball team defeated Maine East 3-2 in a nonconference game.

Joe Jordan had 2 RBI for the Wildcats (5-4).

Matthew Patterson pitched the complete game for Wheeling, allowing just 3 hits with 9 strikeouts and a walk.

Patrick Miller homered for Maine East.

Barrington 12, Jacobs 4: Hayden Kraus had a home run, a double and 3 RBI to lead the Broncos (9-2) to a nonconference win. John Seagrist and Jon Gardner each had 2 hits and an RBI for Barrington and Rayth Petersen added a double. Nate Holler picked up the win on the mound, allowing just 1 hit with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk in 6 innings of work.

Conant 5, Lake Park 4: Jon Bustamante's single scored Jake Tsoulos with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cougars won the nonconference game at Boomers Stadium. Teague Conrad (2 hits), Xander Leary, Ryan Schar and Ryan Taylor each doubled for Conant (1-7). Brandon Ryan was the winning pitcher in relief.

St. Viator 5, Fremd 4: Conor Warner and Casey Hintz each had 2 hits and an RBI while Eric Adams and Owen Hickey doubled to lead the Lions (7-1) to the nonconference win. Dan Thompson went 5⅔ innings for the win and Hickey picked up the save. Brent Swenson (2 hits) homered for Fremd (2-6) and Ryan Kiolbassa added 2 hits.

Maine West 6, Prospect 2: Emmett Olson fired a complete game 1-hitter with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk, and hit a home run himself, as the Warriors (2-6-1) claimed the nonconference win. Alex del Real added 3 hits with a double and 2 RBI for Maine West. Ethan Burgh had a double and an RBI for Prospect (3-5-1).

Evanston 8, Hersey 7: Jake Irwin (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Will Adamski (2 RBI) led Hersey (6-3) in this nonconference game.

Rolling Meadows 10, Niles North 5: Leading the Mustangs (2-6) in their nonconference win were Jacob Johnson-Wright (2 hits, 2B, 3 RBI), Luke Joyce (2 hits, 2B, RBI), Sean Budin (2 hits, 3 RBI), Sean Nolan (2B) and Jermaine Salcedo (2B). Budin went five innings on the mound for the win, allowing 6 hits with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Palatine 4, Carmel 4: Jake Andersen (2 hits), Jack Betz (2B, 2 RBI), Eric Pecson (2B), Shailan Rajpurka (2B) and Josh Stitt (2B) led Palatine (4-5-1) in a nonconference tie. Stitt went 5⅓ innings on the hill for the Pirates, allowing 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

St. Pat's 5, Maine South 1: Billy Inserra had 2 hits for Maine South (7-4) in the nonconference loss.
