Softball: Peterson's homer lifts Barrington

Senior Kendall Peterson's 3-run homer with one out in the top of the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and helped lift Barrington to a historic softball win on Tuesday.

The Fillies' 6-2 decision was their 1,100th win in program history, third most in state history behind Casey-Westfield and Lockport.

It was also the Fillies' first win on the campus of softball powerhouse Sandburg (5-6) which has been to the state final 12 times (fifth most in the state), only twice more than Barrington (eighth most in the state).

Peterson's blast well over the left field fence was her fifth homer in six games for Barrington (5-1).

Senior right-hander Barbara Covek (5-1) enjoyed her finest outing of the season, tossing a 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts and no walks.

Peterson (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 runs) was one of four multiple hitters for the Fillies. The others were Leyden Atlas (3-for-3), Gina Magro (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Katherine Stagnito (2-for-5, double, RBI).

Elk Grove 14, Wheaton North 1: Elk Grove coach Ken Grams was hardly exaggerating when he said it was a 'big day' for junior Lauren Clausen. The Grenadiers' right-hander (2-0) went 4-for-4 with 2 home runs, 6 RBI and 4 runs scored and also threw a 5-hitter with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Grace Engwall (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and AJ Trausch also belted homers, giving the Grens 11 in four games. Other multiple hitters for visiting EG (3-1) were Taylor Schulz (2-for-4, double) and Olivia Masnica (2-for-3, 2 runs). Morgan Leach also added a double for EG.

Addison Trail 8, Rolling Meadows 5: Stephanie Thompson (2-for-3, double, RBI), Caroline Slowik (3-for-4, RBI), Sami Benner (2-for-4) and Sam Allen (2-for-4, double, RBI) led the offense for the host Mustangs (1-2). RM sophomore Annie Piet's 2-run double was her first varsity hit.

Maine West 2, Evanston 1: Jessica Steingard's two-out 2-run single in the first inning scored Gabbi Demma (double) and Amanda Byrne (walk) for Maine West's only runs. Abby Gawlinski threw a complete game 6-hitter with 6 walks to earn the win for the host Warriors (5-3) in the Central Suburban League crossover. Olivia Feldkamp also had a single for West which was outhit 6-3 by Evanston.

Schaumburg 15, Elgin 0: Sophie Rainey belted a home run and has 2 RBI as host Schaumburg (1-6) earned its first win in the nonconference game. Other top hitters for the Saxons were freshman Marisa Vodicka (2-for, 3 runs, triple), senior Tiffani Rudnick (2-for-3, 3 RBI, double), junior Talia Torosian (1-for-2, 2 RBI, double) and Abbie Greenberg (double). Lauren Nielsen (1-0) earned her first varsity win, throwing a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts.

Cary-Grove 12, Buffalo Grove 9: Angelina Craig (3-for-3, 4 runs, home run, double, 2 RBI, double), Megan Fontanetta (2-for-4, double, 3 runs) and Bailey Williams (3-for-4, 3 RBI) led the offense for the host Bison (1-1).

Carmel 16, Fremd 6: Jordan Swiatkowski hit a pair of 3-run homers for Carmel in the nonconference win game over visiting Fremd (1-2). Freshman Ava Jordan (3-for-3, double, 3 RBI), junior McKenna Schneider (3-for-4, RBI) and freshman Elaina Kraus (2-for-2, RBI) led the Vikings' offense.

Leyden 4, Lyons 0: Sophomore Bre Deutscher earned the shutout with 8 strikeouts for host Leyden (6-0) which received a double from junior Elyse McLaughlin.
