Baseball: Grayslake North edges Grayslake Central
Nick Lovitsch's sixth-inning, two-out, two-strike triple into left-center field followed by Trace Taskovic's RBI single proved to be the difference, as host Grayslake North edged Grayslake Central 2-1 in the two baseball teams' Northern Lake County Conference opener Tuesday.
Adam Calhoun outdueled Northwestern-bound Coby Moe, who allowed 1 run but no hits in 3⅔ innings. Moe, who struck out five and walked three, got a no-decision.
Grayslake North improved to 3-2 overall.
Grant 15, Wauconda 8: Daniel Laughery (double), Carlos Martinez (double, 3 RBI) and Henry Kusiak (double, 3 RBI) each had 3 hits for Grant (6-2) in the Northern Lake County Conference opener.
Jimmy Taylor added a double and 2 RBI for Grant. Aaron Vertuno (1-0) notched the win, and Jimmy Taylor struck out five in 2 innings to earn the save.
Antioch 15, Round Lake 1: The Sequoits had 10 hits in the Northern Lake County Conference opener, and Austin Andrew earned the win.
Carmel 8, Deerfield 7: Lukas Galdoni was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, as the Corsairs improved to 4-0.
Sean Lynch Jr., Drew Wiegman and Kyle Grawe also doubled. Grawe also knocked in a run and walked twice. Jake Adams earned the win.
Stevenson 5, Libertyville 3: Michael D'Angelo was 2-for-3 with an RBI, as the host Patriots avenged Monday's loss in the two teams' North Suburban Conference opener.
Libertyville, which outhit Stevenson 12-7, got a home run from Dylan Drumke. Drumke, Andrew Kim, Garrison Bennett and David Robertson each had 2 hits for the Wildcats. Robertson, Derek Calamari and Tanner Kelly all doubled.
Mundelein 8, Lake Forest 3: Christian Diaz was 3-for-3 with a double and 3 runs scored, Austin Greco homered and drove in 3 runs, and the host Mustangs won in North Suburban Conference action.
Andrew Schroeder and Greco each had 2 hits for Mundelein, which also got a double from Michael Rastrelli. Rahul Champaneri pitched 6 innings for the win, allowing 2 earned runs, striking out six and walking three.
Lake Zurich 15, Zion-Benton 1: Noah DeLuga struck out nine batters in 4 innings, and the Bears won the North Suburban Conference game in five innings.
DeLuga helped himself at the plate with a triple and 2 walks. Jamees Piggott was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, while Michael Chialdikas (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and Michael Gallus (2-for-3, RBI) also had big games offensively.
Warren 22, Waukegan 2: Nate Rentas hit a grand slam and double, as the Blue Devils cruised in North Suburban Conference Casey Cobe and Bradley Vondruska also had doubles for Warren (8-2, 2-0), and Justin Vaughan earned the win.
Prospect 4, Lakes 2: The host Knights scored 4 unearned runs off Joe Glassey in the first inning.
Glassey pitched 5 innings, striking out eight, walking two and allowing 2 hits. At the plate, he was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Lakes also got 2 hits from Jeff Nielsen and a double from Logan Hanson.
