Boys lacrosse: Fish, Grayslake North down Barrington

Grayslake North's boys lacrosse team has all the tools to become one of the top teams in the area.

Balanced scoring, quick and steady defense, to go with a top-flight goalie.

All three were put together in the Knights' 18-2 win over host Barrington Saturday afternoon in a nonconference contest.

The Broncos (1-3) were missing four starters due to injuries.

Nick Fish scored 5 goals while, Michael Trabulsy, Jacob Johnson, Aidan Vettraino, and Dominic Solano each had 2 goals as the Knights remained unbeaten at 3-0.

"I don't want to get too caught up in our record," said Knights coach Brad Fish. "This was only game three and we've got 16 more to go including the state playoffs. I knew coming in we would be tough offensively."

Nick Fish is touted as one of the top players in the state.

"He's pretty good," said Brad Fish, Nick's dad. "He's got a lot of natural talent. He's a three-sport athlete. He's the quarterback on the football team, the point guard on the basketball team, and he has a high IQ for lacrosse."

Nick Fish credits his father and older brother for making him the player that he has become.

"I obviously have my dad as my coach and my older brother, who was a great lacrosse player, helping me," Nick Fish said. "I grew up learning from them.

"Today we wanted a fast start. It sets the tone for the rest of the game. We were able to create one-on-one situations and then beating that man to the goal."

With Fish scoring 2 goals and assisting on two others in the first quarter the Knights took a 7-0 lead after one quarter.

Leading 10-0 with: 36 left in the first half the Broncos' Nathan Nguyen broke up the shutout with a goal with 36 seconds left before halftime.

Nguyen would score his second goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Grayslake North goalie Campbell Herlt saved 3 shots while Barrington goalie Aidan Sadler saved 9 shots.

"Our defense has been a little bit better than I thought early on," said Brad Fish. "Our goalie has really been great for us. Zach Carter (defense) is back after missing the first two games. He may be our best player."

"As a goalie you need to start the communication," said Herlt. "To have a good year we just need to keep our defense going. We need to stay together as a team. If you are not communicating, teams will score on you and then you lose."

The Broncos will need to get their four starters back before Thursday's Mid-Suburban West opener.

"We need to get healthy and be able to shore up some things for the conference opener, " said Barrington coach Jason Kaiser.
