Baseball: Ashley's grand slam powers Grant to victory

Mikal Ashley belted a grand slam, singled and drove in 5 runs, and Grant's baseball team beat visiting Elk Grove 17-5 in a nonconference game Saturday.

Danny Laughery (triple) and Henry Kusiak each had 3 hits, 2 RBI and scored three times for the Bulldogs (5-2), while Jimmy Taylor (1-0) earned the win. Grant's other offensive contributors included Valentin Cerna (2-for-3, RBI), Joey Califf (2-for-2, 2 runs), Bryce Mandala (double) and Jesse James (single, 2 RBI).

Stevenson 10, Geneva 2: At Thompson Field in Tennessee, the Patriots got home runs from Michael D'Angelo, Chris Farina, Ryan McElhinny and Zach Taylor.

Farina (3-for-4) also doubled and singled and scored 3 runs. McElhinny (2-for-4, 2 runs), D'Angelo (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and Taylor (2-for-3, 3 RBI) also multiple hits as well.

Warren 9, Grayslake North 1: Dru Jasnoch earned the complete-game win, allowing 5 hits, striking out six and walking none in the nonconference game in Gurnee.

Mikey Kocen was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for Warren (6-2). Bradley Vondruska and Brian Rapanan doubled for the Blue Devils.

Trace Taskovic was 2-for-3 for Grayslake North, and Jack Sisson (1-for-3) drove in the Knights' lone run.

Yorkville 5, Lakes 4: In Tennessee, the Eagles outhit their opponent 12-3 but committed 4 errors and allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Chance Andell and Andrew Huissen (RBI) were both 3-for-4 for Lakes. Jason Volpe was 2-for-4 with a double, and Ethan Clark finished 2-for-2 with a double and RBI. Logan Hanson added a double and 2 RBI for the Eagles.
