Softball: Scouting the Northwest suburbs

Mid-Suburban East

Buffalo GroveCoach: Starr Dorsey (fourth season)

Last year's record: 8-16, 4-12

Graduated players: Lauren Beiersdorf, Olivia Morini, Katelyn O'Rourke

Returning players: Jacqueline Bickhaus (Sr. SS), Sam Hansen (Sr, 3B, C), Bailey Williams (Sr, 1B), Hannah Young (Sr, OF), Megan Fontanetta (Jr, P/ SS/2B/3B), Elle Christou (So, OF), Kylie Mainville (So, P/1B)

Newcomers: Peyton Morgan (So, 1B/3B), Angelina Craig (FR, 2B/SS/OF), Lexi Imhof (FR, U), Kimberly Stuercke (FR, C/IF), Grace Veller (FR, OF)

Outlook: Dorsey took over the program four years ago when her current seniors were freshmen so she knows them well. "We have great leadership in our senior class this year," the former Auburn University softball star said. "I think their commitment to the team and their passion for the game will push our team to compete well this season." The Bison infield is full of upperclassmen and will be a strength. Two of them were the top two hitters for BG last spring. Fontanetta batted .403 while Bickhaus hit .397. "They both have great offensive mindsets and are tough to keep off base with on-base percentages (Bickhaus at .481 and Fontanetta at .465)," Dorsey said. "They know the game well and have a lot of varsity experience." Young, a senior, will anchor the youthful outfield. "So we expect her to be a vocal leader throughout the season," Dorsey said.

Elk Grove Coach: Ken Grams (39th season)

Last year's record: 16-14 11-5

Returning players: Brooke Baldasarree (Sr, OF), Lauren Clausen (Jr, P/ OF), Grace Engwall (Jr. 1B/C), Alexa Fontanetta (Sr, 2B/OF), Jaimie Klicka (Sr, 3B/1B/P), Morgan Leach (So. OF), Olivia Masnica (So, SS/P), Katia Pendowski (Jr, C/1B), AJ Trausch (So, OF)

Newcomers: Taylor Schulz (So, 3B/2B/SS)

Outlook: With all nine starters back from a team that won 16 games and was in the MSL East race to the final week, there is no doubt the Grenadiers expect to contend for a 20th divisional title under hall of fame coach Grams, who has won five MSL crowns and 925 career games, the most of any active coach in Illinois and second all time. "With no seniors last year, there were plenty of opportunities for this team to gain an understanding of what it takes to compete at the varsity level of high school softball," Grams said. "That is an invaluable asset for them to take into the season." Pendowski is a three-year starter and led the team in batting average and home runs last year. Klicka and Fontanetta are also third-year starters. "We were able to finish on a strong uptick by putting together a very, very solid last half of the season," Grams said. "We are still a relatively young group so the expectations are we continue to grow and learn as we go. And, of course, to apply those opportunities and experiences to performance on the field."

HerseyCoach: Molly Freeman (12th season)

Last year's record: 20-8, 11-5

Graduated players: Hannah Graff, Jodie Hermann, Asia Luboyeski, Gabby Samperi, Sammy Pracko

Returning players: Seniors: Sarah Bailitz (Sr, P/1B), Renae Curtis (Sr, 2B), Chloe Gordon (Sr, 3B), Brianna Luciano (Sr, P/SS), Makayla Tsagalis (Sr. OF); Morgan Breden (Jr, C), Savannah Gazda (Jr. P/OF), Kylie Makuh (Jr, OF), Ria Patel (Jr, OF)

Newcomers: Megan Mullen (Jr, OF), Emily Thomas (Jr, 3B), Natalia Kubsic (So, SS/3B), Antoinette Napoli (So, 2B), Lauren Steininger (So, C)

Outlook: The MSL East co-champions are returning solid experience to the field this season, led by four-year varsity players Bailitz, Luciano and Tsagalis. "We are very excited about the experience they bring to our team," said former Fremd and UIC standout outfielder Molly Freeman. "They have created a foundation and an expectation for the new and returning players to follow." Luciano, a Winona State commit, struck out 145 batters in 92 innings last season. She hit .516 with 3 home runs, 3 triples and 14 doubles with 49 hits and 36 RBI. Bailitz emerged as one of the most dominating offensive players in the Mid-Suburban League East. After spending the last two seasons with minimal at-bats, Bailitz lead the Huskies with a .533 batting average, 10 home runs, 13 doubles and 49 hits. Tsagalis is a South Dakota recruit. "As always it is our team chemistry that will keep our team bonded," Freeman said. "And we will work together to try and achieve our goals of representing Hersey in the East title game for the third straight year as well as being successful in the regionals, sectionals and beyond."

ProspectCoach: Krystina Mackowiak (third season)

Last year's record: 20-8, 11-5

Graduated players: Sam Busse, Alyssa Cacini, Lauren Caldrone, Alex Kanter, Jackie Orel, Colleen Palczynski, Kaitlyn Pancini

Returning players: Katie Annen (Sr, C), Madeline Borkowski (Sr, OF), Cassie Cunniff (Sr, IF), Emalee Depa (Sr, P/INF), Claire Doherty (Jr, P/INF)

Newcomers: Alexandra Garnmeister (FR, IF), Mary Granskog (Sr, IF), Kathryn Keehn (FR, OF), Anna Linneman (Sr, P/INF), Emma Muehlenbeck (So, OF), Amanda Pinter (So, OF), Adeline Wantauch (Sr, C/IF)

Outlook: The Knights were co-champions last spring and hope to carry the momentum into the season. "We are coming off a successful season and the team has every intention of continuing on that success this year," said Mackowiak, a former standout pitcher at Carthage College and Elk Grove. "We have some work to do to fill in the roles of the key seniors we graduated last season, but we have girls eager to step up and make an impact this season." Doherty and Depa are returning to the mound after playing an important role last season. "It is big for us to have their experience on the field and could be the difference for us in close games," Mackowiak said. "I am excited for the upcoming season and the potential this team has. With a strong senior presence on the team, we will look to their leadership to develop the younger players."

Rolling MeadowsCoach: Tony Wolanski (16th season)

Last year's record: 13-18, 5-11

Graduated players: Mallory King, Parker Cavanaugh

Returning players: Sara Benner (Sr, 1B), Stephanie Thompson (Sr. C), Sam Allen (Sr, SS), Kendra Herring (Sr. P), Caroline Slowik (Sr. 2B/OF), Emily Schmidt (Sr. 2B/OF), Elise Kowalski (Sr. P), Kelsie Campbell (Jr. OF), Sami Benner (So, 3B)

Newcomers: Sarah Ingemunson (Jr, 1B), Sam Elenz (So, OF/SS), Annie Piet (So, OF/P), Gia Picicco (So, 2B), Kendall Fahnoe (FR. C), Allie Soukup (FR, SS)

Outlook: The Mustangs return seven seniors who have been on varsity since their freshmen or sophomore year. In all, they return nine varsity players, including eight starters. One is the school's all-time leading home run hitter, Sara Benner (. 525, 15 homers, 51 RBI), who will lead an experienced team that would like to compete in the MSL East race. Thompson (. 373, 2 homers, 16 RBI), Allen (. 383, 5 homers, 26 RBI), Slowik and Schmidt will make the Mustangs strong up the middle. Kowalski and Herring (. 433, 2 homers, 22 RBI) return to the mound. Sam Benner and Campbell should be starters this season along with Elenz, Piet and Ingemunson (1B), who will all vie for playing time. "We have a good group of players who have been working hard in practice," Wolanski said. "The key to our success depends on being a more consistent team. All three phases of the game have to improve. We have to realize that because we return some starters that doesn't always translate to more wins. We have to focus and learn to play as a team for us to compete this season."

WheelingCoach: Mike Caringella (10th season)

Last year's record: 0-22, 0-16

Graduated players: Karson Burgess, Jessica Marquez, Veronica Petzold, Dakota Medrano, Olivia Walker

Returning players: Giuliana Geati (Sr, OF), Nikki Ferraro (Sr, OF), Emmie LaCaeyse (Jr, P/IF), Peyton LaCaeyse (Jr, SS), Sophia Stanke (Jr, OF)

Newcomers: Lexi Bernstein (FR, IF), Lexi Blumka (FR, IF), Sam Janulis (FR, IF/P/C), Mia Joyner (FR, C/IF), Julia Konrath (FR, P/IF), Danni Moser (FR, OF), Nikki Niznik (FR, OF), JoJo Stepak (FR, C/IF).

Outlook: There's youth and experience this year for coach Mike Caringella's Wildcats (eight freshmen and five upperclassmen). "We need to establish a winning attitude for this year and build on it for coming years," said the veteran coach. "Our freshmen come from successful travel programs and are multisport athletes." Caringella said the upperclassmen will bring valuable leadership and experience. "Our team speed is a strength and we will try to capitalize on it by running and forcing other teams to make mistakes," Caringella added.

Mid-Suburban West

BarringtonCoach: Perry Peterson (27th season)

Last year's record: 33-4, 16-0

Returning players: Kendall Peterson (Sr, IF), Leyden Atlas (Sr, OF), Tori Meyer (Sr, P/OF), Samantha Murphy (Sr, IF), Katherine Stagnito (Sr, IF)

Newcomers: Barbara Covek (Sr, P), Gina Magro (Sr. IF), Caroline Huttinger (Sr, C), Patty Lidbury (Sr, OF), Lily Weidler (Sr, OF), Jackie Albrecht (So, P/OF), Brynn Nevers (FR, OF/IF)

Outlook: As they begin their 51st season of softball, the Fillies are 1,096-363. They are looking to build off a second consecutive MSL championship and 17th consecutive regional championship. This is the largest senior class since hall of fame coach Perry Peterson took over the program in 1993. Three Division I recruits will lead the way - Northwestern's Kendall Peterson (. 430, 49 hits,) Hofstra's Leyden Atlas (. 329, 16 RBI, 2 grand slams) and DePaul's Tori Meyer (. 420, 12-3 on the mound). Murphy hit .337 last season with 25 RBI and 12 doubles while Stagnito batted .317 with 36 runs. Meyer's status for the 2019 season is uncertain due to an ACL injury suffered during the first girls basketball game of the season in November. Nevertheless, the Fillies have unfinished business to pursue. The team entertains a tremendous schedule this spring including Ottawa and Pontiac in the Washington Panther Classic, St. Charles East, Huntley, Sandburg and the return of the third annual Illinois Coaches Association Greg Easter Invitational Tournament at the Fields of Dreams on May 10 and 11. The 16-team event will host four schools from each of the four IHSA classes.

ConantCoach: Allie Bauch (first season)

Last year's record: 15-10, 10-6

Graduated players: Sydney Correa, Jackie Burchfield, Jackie Carlucci, P (Wisconsin Eau Claire), Makenna McCarthy (Winona State), Paige Nallen Delaney Szwed

Returning players: Trystin Lovas (Sr, IF), Morgan Long (Sr, C/IF), Hannah Oh (Jr. OF), Julia Flaishaker (So, P/U), Tara Lovas (So, C/U)

Newcomers: Emily Taucher (Sr. IF), Amanda Santangelo (Jr, OF), Kayleen Sebo (Jr, P), Katie Maize (Jr, P/OF), Ali Falcone (So, C/IF), Emma Wokurka (So, OF), Janessa Gonzalez (FR, IF/OF)

Outlook: Despite six players graduating last year, Conant has a core group back that is dedicated and understands the vision under first-year coach Allie Bauch, a former Cougar standout herself. "They are working hard to get the 2019 season off to a good start," said Bauch, who also starred at Illinois. "This year brings on a lot of new elements for Conant with no home softball field as well." Bauch is encouraged by the leadership displayed by the core players. "They have really bought into the program, are adapting to the changes and have embraced the ideas of hard work and team unity," she said. Senior Long (Milwaukee School of Engineering recruit) will lead behind the plate, receiving pitches from Flaishaker, Maize and newcomer Sebo. "All three complement each other very well on the mound and reflect what Conant is looking for to keep our opponents off balance," Bauch said. University of Wisconsin-River Falls recruit Trystan Lovas will handle second base while Oh will take charge in center field. Expect Tara Lovas to see action in multiple positions to exploit her versatility as a catcher and infielder. Newcomers Taucher, Falcone, Santangelo, Wokurka and Gonzalez are all talented, versatile and eager. "They will help Conant make a statement this year and work toward being tested and ready for the postseason," Bauch added. "We're a young team but I'm impressed with the girls' enthusiasm and passion and I believe we're going to surprise some teams along the way. I look forward to continuing the competitive culture that Cathyann Smith (hall of famer who had been in charge for past 18 years) created."

FremdCoach: Josh Teschner (third season)

Last year's record: 21-11, 9-7

Graduated players: Jess Mazur (Georgia Southern), Lexi D'Ambrosio (Missouri-Kansas City), Anna Freveletti (St. Johns), Grace Stevens (Wisconsin-Oshkosh), Kaylee Goluch (Millikin), Hannah Ban (University of Illinois Club), Gabi Laccino, Nikki Kehoe, Bella Wojcik

Returning players: Gianna Arnieri (Sr, CF), Hailey Hazlett (Sr, P), McKenna Schneider (Jr, SS/2B), Sophia Crescio (U)

Newcomers: Caitlin Peterson (Sr, OF), Reagan Goluch (Jr, 1B), Sydney Kruto (Jr, 1B), Kelsey Brauer (Jr, OF), Cali DiVito (So, 3B), Grace Hiller (So, 1B/P), Elaina Kraus (FR, C), Kalyn McCarthy (FR, 2B/SS), Ava Jordan (FR, OF)

Outlook: Last year's seniors set more records than any other class over the last eight years at Fremd. Only the repeat-state qualifying class of 2010 was more accomplished in the last 15 years. With 92 percent of the offense graduated, along with a pitching staff that handled 98 percent of the innings pitched over the past four seasons, it's not a surprise coach Josh Teschner will have the youngest Fremd team since 2008. The Vikings will sport a roster with nine first-year varsity players while returning only two starters (2B/SS Schneider and CF Arnieri). "They've both stepped up as leaders on a very young team," Teschner said. "Along with Caitlin Peterson, they led the way through winter workouts as we pieced together a new puzzle." Crescio hit just under .400 in the final 14 games last spring after being called up from junior varsity. She was second on the team in steals with 11. Hazlett will anchor the pitching staff after a successful junior year. Three freshmen and two sophomores will start. "The most impressive characteristics of this team are their athleticism and speed," Teschner said. "This winter they were committed to improving their athleticism first and foremost and it really shows. While young, these Vikings are immensely talented and ready for varsity competition."

Hoffman EstatesCoach: Lindsey Hamma (14th season)

Last year's record: 5-19-1, 3-13

Graduated players: Brandi Ballentine, Mary Bean (competing at Southern Indiana University), Jenny Camiliere, Martina DeAstis, Allura Magsino, and Giselle Velazquez (competing at Barry University)

Returning players: Kaelyn Kramp (Sr. 2B/OF), Yaya Nieves (Sr. C/UT), Ayanna Ward (Sr. P/1B), Emily Grossi (Jr. P/IF), Brianna Venegas (Jr. SS/2B), Patricia Wadas (Jr. OF)

Newcomers: Emily Hunt (Sr. UT), Madison Barnes (Jr. UT), Jessica Donovan (Jr. P/UT), Alex Dyer (Jr. C/UT), Samantha Sarullo (Jr. IF), Tori Spitz (Jr. UT), Jayleen Suarez (Jr. OF), Ryan Cloherty (FR. P/IF), Emily Morris (FR. IF), Gracie Velazquez (FR. CF/C/1B)

Outlook: The Hawks begin their 14th season under the direction of coach Lindsey Hamma, a former Bandits, University of Illinois, and Buffalo Grove star. Her co-captains this spring are a pair of juniors - Grossi and Venegas. "Emily has started the season recovering from illness and we cannot wait to have her back after spring break," Hamma said. "Bri has definitely taken a strong leadership role from early on, and she has clearly set the tone for our expectations for the program." In all, nine juniors are on the roster. "We are looking to our heavy junior class to step in and earn the roles of many of our graduated players," Hamma said. "I think it has been a really healthy competition as to where everyone is going to fit in. We are excited about all our newcomers, including the addition of three freshmen (Cloherty, Velazquez, and Morris)." Cloherty and Velazquez served as the Hawks' battery in their season opener against St. Viator. "That's definitely exciting for the future of the program," Hamma said. Nieves, Kramp, Ward, and Wadas are also expected to play big roles as returners from last year's team.

PalatineCoach: Nicole Capalbo (fifth season)

Last year's record: 30-6, 14-2

Graduated players: Maddie Craver, Sarah Grossman, Brittany Padden, Grace Seiffert

Returning players: Emily Parrott (Sr, SS), Grace Huff, (Sr, CF), Anna Selleck (Sr. C), Amanda Stanczuk (Sr. C/IF), Rhiann Dick (Jr. P), Emily Brinckerhoff (Jr. OF), Chase Friel (Jr. U), Mandy Logan (Jr, 2B), Kaitlyn Reed (So, U)

Newcomers: Kelly Beach (FR, P), Kayla Courtney (FR, 2B), Caitlin Williams (FR, OF)

Outlook: After last year's big third-place finish in the Class 4A state finals, the Pirates are ready for everyone's best shot. "We are ready to compete with a target on our jerseys this season," said Pirates coach Nicole Capalbo. "Our team is athletic this season and game smart." The Pirates have four seniors with strong leadership skills. "They will continue to teach our younger players our program's philosophies and expectations of what it means to be in our program, "said Capalbo, a former Palatine and Northwestern University standout. "We are competitive and can make adjustments quickly, which will hopefully give us an advantage playing in a tough MSL conference." Among the returnees is Northwestern recruit Huff, who batted .528 with 49 runs 66 RBI and 11 homers last season. Appalachian State recruit Parrot hit .492 with 50 runs 61 hits and classmate Stanczuk batted .459 with 51 RBI and 56 hits. Returning to the mound is Wisconsin-Whitewater recruit Dick, who was 7-3 as a sophomore with a 2.90 ERA and 69 strikeouts. "In every position, we have gotten faster and stronger with all the hard work the girls put in the offseason," said Capalbo, who also served as a Loyola University assistant coach and played for the Akron Racers and Chicago Bandits in the National Professional League. "I am excited about competing on the field with this team. You will see passion, respect for the game and a desire to get back to Peoria this June."

SchaumburgCoach: Ellen Abreu (ninth season)

Last year's record: 3-21, 2-14

Graduated players: Jayme Kissamis, Rachel Kissamis, Sydney Sturino, Janalee Lyke, and Caitlin Bertaud

Returning players: Tatiana Cooper (Sr, OF), Tiffani Rudnick (Sr, OF), Sage Morton (Sr, OF/1B), Megan Pasquarelli (Sr, 1B/P), Nikki Kolodziej (Jr, OF), Talia Torosian (Jr, SS/3B)

Newcomers: Sophie Rainey (So, C/3B), Kim Kolodziej (FR, 2B/C), Marisa Vodicka (FR, 3B/C), Morgan Miller (FR, P/2B)

Outlook: As she begins her ninth season directing the Saxons' program, former Fremd great Ellen Abreu wants to see her team always looking to improve. Abreu welcomes back six players, including shortstop Torosian, who was an all-conference selection in the Mid-Suburban League as a sophomore. A two-year starter, Torosian excelled in the field and the batter's box. She batted .441 with 30 hits, 12 RBI, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs and a slugging percentage of .691. She also was a leader in the infield. Torosian is one of six returning players along with five newcomers. "Our goal this season are to strive to be the best defensive and offensive team we can be, day-in and day-out," said Abreu, who led the Saxons to an MSL crown in 2015.

West Suburban Gold

LeydenCoach: Kurt Schuett (15th season)

Last year's record: 19-7, 9-3

Graduated players: Erica Arroy, Sara Cole, Alyssa Monarrez, Kristina Aliota, Amalia Figueroa

Returning players: Emma Bertsche (Sr, P), Ryan Fontanetta (Sr, CF), Kailey Kirkwood (Sr. SS), Tara Mackey (Sr, 3B), Clarissa Messina, (Sr. 1B), Elle Engelke (Jr, C), Bre Deutscher (So, P/U), Yaritza Frias (So, 2B)

Newcomers: Morgan Carli (Sr, OF), Jenny Molini (Sr, U), Gianna Petrucci (U), Anixa Cisneros (Jr, U), Arianna Hantosh (Jr, P), Sophia Kasza (Jr, C), Elyse McLaughlin (Jr. OF)

Outlook: It appears to be a promising season for the Eagles, who took an early exit out of the postseason last year when the bats went cold against a really solid Maine South squad. With a good number of veterans back from a team that placed second in the WSC Gold, the Eagles are hoping to contend for the title of the conference and have a healthy run in the postseason. Six of their eight seniors are committed to college softball programs - Bertsche (Triton), Fontanetta (Triton), Kirkwood (Triton), Mackey (Reinhardt in Waleska, Ga.), Messina (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and Petrucci (Dominican). Top competition on the Eagles' schedule this spring appears to be Whitney Young, Downers South, Lyons Township, Palatine and Jacobs.

Central Suburban North

Maine West Coach: Jim Dvorak (third season)

Last year's record: 15-10, 9-1

Graduated players: Katelyn Aragon, Bridget Christiansen, Allison Eby, Allison Pearson.

Returning players: Maraya Adams (Sr, DP), Angelis Beiza (So, C), Amanda Byrne (Jr, C), Gabbi Demma (Sr, 2B), Emily Divelbus (So, 3B), Abby Gawlinski (So, P/1b), Olivia Feldkamp (Sr, SS), Rebecca Ragusin (SR, OF), Jessica Steingard (JR, P/1B), Brianna Torres (Jr, OF)

Newcomers: Yessania Vilches (Sr, OF), Brianna Migaczewski (Jr, OF/P), Liliana Sanchez (Jr, OF), Makenna Delafield (FR, U), Katelyn Weber (Jr. OF).

Outlook: Consistent pitching and fielding appear to be the strengths for Dvorak's third varsity team at West. "We have some holes to fill from last year, but we have five returning all-conference players who are capable of improving the team record," he said. Dvorak expects a stronger hitting club from last year's club that won the CSL North. All-conference selections Steingard and Byrne begin their third year as the primary battery. "They should be much improved and keep scoring by our opponents low," Dvorak said. "The middle infield also returns two all-conference players (Feldkamp and Demma) while the fifth returning all-conference player (Torres) is in the outfield." Gawlinski will be a strong pitching backup for Steingard and will also play first base. "Our goals are to be consistent and competitive in all games," Dvorak said. "We'd like to get back-to-back conference championships and win in the postseason. I want the girls to enjoy and love the game. We look forward to representing the school and learn from the our state champion girls basketball team that through hard work, consistency, and team unity, great things can happen." The Warriors are playing a more challenging nonconference schedule. "Vernon Hills and Deerfield are rival games in the conference," Dvorak added. "We look to make some noise with the other returning players and newcomers and are waiting to see who is ready to emerge and shine. We look forward to representing the school and have set high goals."

East Suburban Catholic

St. ViatorCoach: John Scotillo (sixth season)

Last year's record: 7-26, 2-12

Graduated players: Haley Robinson. Anne Sweeney, Jessica Taylor, Victoria Scheidecker

Returning players: Cece Kaiser (Sr, IF), Maggie VanValkenburg (Sr, OF), Nicole Ardito (Jr, IF/OF), Morgan Bielfeldt (Jr, C), Elise Bollard (Jr, OF/P), Ava Davis (Jr, OF), Mary Naughton (So, P/IF), Gianna Saverino (So, P/IF), Marissa Zanon (IF, OF)

Newcomers: Lauren Allaire (FR, OF), Allison Ardito (FR, C/INF), Cassidy Gibson (FR, C/INF), Kyra Hatch (FR, C/OF), Morgan Joyce (FR, C/INF), Katherine Klein (FR, OF)

Outlook: With so many new faces (six freshmen), Lions coach John Scotillo is not sure what to expect this spring. "What I do know is that this is a very talented group of freshmen," he said. "We will be a very young team with only two seniors and two-thirds of the team are underclassmen." Viator has two strong seniors as captains, Kaiser (last year's home run leader) and VanValkenburg (last year's defensive player of the year. Both are four-year varsity players. Sophomores Saverino and Naughton return as pitchers along with the freshman Joyce. Ardito moves from the outfield to the infield and will be joined by her freshman sister Allison. Scotillo also said the bulk of catching will be handled by Bielfeldt. "She has worked very hard and is looking for a breakout year," he said. "As always, we hope to be more competitive in the ESCC."
