Softball: Carmel outslugs Vernon Hills in Alabama

A pair of Lake County softball teams hooked up in Alabama before heading home.

Marla Walinski went 4-for-5 at the plate and pitched a complete game, as Carmel Catholic outslugged Vernon Hills 14-8 Thursday.

Hailie Swiatkowski (RBI) and Emy Krysa (double, RBI) each went 3-for-5 for the Corsairs, who also got contributions from Jordan Swiatkowski (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), Sydney Schuda (2-for-5, triple, RBI), Kyla Rapplean (2-for-5, triple, 3 RBI), Julia Shrofe (2-for-5, 3 RBI), Allie Schlitz (1-for-4) and Allison Novak (1-for-3, RBI).

Vernon Hills was led offensively by Elisa Handler (2-for-4, triple, RBI), Delaney Bowen (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI), Rachel Wright (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double) and Jordyn Smith (double).

Grayslake North 12, Marshall (Wis.) 1: The Knights picked up a victory in their final game in Florida, as Nicole Hughes went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.

Faith Standerski (2-for-4, double, RBI), Jess Pozezinski (2-for-2, double, RBI) and Ashton Moore (2-for-2, double) had multiple hits as well. Grace Brown (RBI), Alyssa Carr (RBI), Caitlin Barenbaum (double) and Gianna Certa contributed offensively too.

The Knights finished the trip 4-1 and move to 5-3 on the season. They resume play on April 2 against Grayslake Central.

Wausau West (Wis.) 2, Grayslake Central 0: In Florida, the Rams were shut out in their final game on their spring trip.

Elisa Koshy was 2-for-3 for Grayslake Central (3-2), which outhit its Wisconsin opponent 7-5. Grace Bradley pitched a complete game, allowing 1 earned run with 2 strikeouts and 0 walks in 6 innings.

Grayslake Central 7, Oconomowoc (Wis.) 0: In Florida, in their first of two games on the day, the Rams picked up as the win, as Corinne Heidloff went the distance in the circle.

Heidloff struck out nine, walked four and did not allow an earned run. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI. Bridget Marshall and Grace Bradley (2 RBI) both went 2-for-4, and Rachel Smigielski was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
