Softball: Debevec's homer powers Antioch in season opener

Freshman Gabby Debevec hit a 2-run homer in her varsity debut, and Antioch's softball team opened the season with a 7-5 win over host Cary-Grove in a nonconference game Wednesday.

Debevec (2-for-4, 2 stolen bases), Ashlyn Sundell (2-for-2, 2 walks, stolen base), Avery Malicki (2-for-3, walk) and Rilee Schreiner (2-for-4, RBI) led the Sequoits' 10-hit attack.

Jeri Bonaguidi went the distance in the circle for Antioch, allowing 1 earned run and 6 hits, while striking out two and not walking a batter.

Grayslake North 12, Waukegan 0: The Knights pounded out 20 hits on their home field in earning their first win of the season.

Grayslake North was the visiting team after Waukegan's field was unplayable. Freshman Gianna Certa earned the win in her varsity debut. She took a perfect game into the fourth and lost her no-hit bid in the sixth. She settled for a 1-hit shut out with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk in an efficient 78-pitch outing.

Grace Brown (4-for-4, double, 3 RBI, walk), Faith Standerski (3-for-5, homer, 3 RBI), Meghan Delahunty (3-for-4, 3 RBI), Caitlin Barenbaum (3-for-4), Certa (3-for-4, double) and Alyssa Carr (2-for-3, RBI) all had multiple hits for the Knights. Eight starters recorded a hit.

Natalie Guzman took the loss, lasting only 1 inning before her sister Vivian Guzman took over in relief. Vivian Guzman had 6 strikeouts through the remaining 6 innings. Yadira Martinez had the lone hit for the Bulldogs, and Andrea Miller walked.

Marengo 8, Mundelein 5: The visiting Mustangs lost the nonconference game, despite strong offensive performances from sophomores Cheyenne Pellettiere and Emma Umbdenstock.

Pellettiere was 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBI, while Umbdenstock went 2-for-3 with a homer and double. Junior Kira Buckner was 2-for-3 as well for Mundelein (0-2).

Marengo (2-0) got homers from Dani Hartmann and Grace Houghton.
