Softball: Barrington wins 12-2 in six innings
College recruits Leyden Atlas and Kendall Peterson each belted a pair of home runs for Barrington's softball team, which began the season with a 12-2 six-inning win over Maine West on Monday.
The Fillies' quarterfinal win in their own Spring Fling sends them into Wednesday's semifinals against Lake Zurich at 4:45 p.m. at the Fields of Dreams.
Hofstra recruit Atlas went 4-for-4 with 3 runs, 3 RBI, a triple and a double while Northwestern-bound Peterson was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, 3 runs and a double.
It was the first multi home run games for Peterson and Atlas, who each have 5 homers for their careers.
Also getting multiple hits for the Fillies were sophomore Jackie Albrecht (2-for-4, double) and freshman Brynn Nevers (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 run).
Senior teammates Gina Magro, Samantha Murphy (double), Caroline Huttinger and Barbara Covek each had a hit. Fillies pinch hitters Tatum Murphy (junior) and freshman Ellie Wintringer also had hits.
Covek (6 strikeouts, no walks) worked the first 4 innings to earn her first varsity win.
Maine West senior Gabbi Demma (2-for-4) had a double while teammates Amanda Byrne and Olivia Feldkamp each had 1 hit.
The win moves Barrington to just 4 shy of 1,100 in program history. The Fillies' 1,096-363 all-time school record ranks third on all-time IHSA list behind Casey-Westfield and Lockport.
