Monday's Lake County roundup: Swiatkowski homers as Carmel wins softball opener

Jordan Swiatkowski hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, Sydney Schuda went the distance in the circle, and Carmel Catholic opened the softball season Monday by beating visiting Cary-Grove 2-1.

Swiatkowski finished 2-for-3. Schuda allowed 3 hits over 7 innings, striking out eight and walking one. C-G scored its run in the fifth.

Carmel will play Stevenson at the Wheeling Park District fields at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Softball

Marengo 13, Grayslake North 7: The host Knights lost their season opener to perennial powerhouse Marengo.

Senior Grace Brown, the Daily Herald All-Area Captain last season, made her first at-bat of the year count, going opposite field for her 36th career bomb. She finished 1-for-1 with 2 walks and a hit by pitch. Junior Nina Wittig (2-for-2) roped a 2-run line drive over the fence in the fifth. Faith Standerski (2-for-4, 2B) Jessica Pozezinski (1-for-4, RBI) and Caitlin Barenbaum (1-for-3, 2B, RBI) also had hits for the Knights, who resume play at Waukegan on Wednesday.

Boys volleyball

Stevenson d. Lakes: Gavin Meng had 9 kills and 3 aces, Andrew Keevins served 5 aces, as the host Patriots opened the season with a 25-21, 25-9 win over the Eagles.

Wally Wormser added 4 kills, while Will Sorenson dished out 20 assists for Stevenson. The Patriots' other contributors included Michael Johnson (2 aces), Justin Ross (2 aces) and John Angelos (2 kills).

Connor Clowers and Ethan Metzelaar each had 4 kills for Lakes. Clowers added 6 digs, and Tyler Donovan dished out 12 assists.

New Trier d. Libertyville: The visiting Trevians rallied for a 21-25, 25-20, 25-21 win in the season opener.

Patrick Graham had 9 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces, 8 digs and 1 assist for Libertyville, and Alex Weick contributed 8 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace and 8 digs. The Wildcats' other contributors included Jack Stavrakos (5 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace, 2 digs), Charlie Schmitt 93 kills, 1 block), Brendan Duffy (2 kills, 3 blocks, 1 dig), Ben Moss (1 kill, 3 blocks), Matt Apgar (15 assists, 2 aces, 4 digs), Devon Hamilton (7 assists, 1 ace) and Cam Edmunds (9 digs, 2 assists).

"It's always a great test for us to play New Trier as our first match of the year," Libertyville coach Jenny Smith said. "Usually a back-and-forth battle, this one was the same with early season errors getting the best of us. We were happy with our level of play and maturity on the court, despite many new faces. We hope to work out some kinks before Hersey on Wednesday and the Vernon Hills/Barrington tournament this weekend."

Wheeling d. Mundelein: The host Wildcats won 25-21, 25-20 in season-opening action.

Ricky Osornio had 3 kills and 2 blocks for Mundelein, while Marc Rey contributed 2 kills and 4 blocks. The Mustangs also got 2 kills apiece from Eric Morales and Andrew Gibbons.

Girls soccer

Carmel 4, Palatine 2: The host Corsairs gave up a two-goal lead but recovered enough to post the nonconference win.

Carmel's Liz Galla broke the 2-2 tie in the 59th minute of play with a header off a cross from her sister Sarah. Zanaya Barnes added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute for Carmel (2-1) off an assist from Lucy Tarcha.

Sarah Galla and Olivia Salvi had the Corsairs' other goals.

"Our attack is strong right now," Carmel coach Ray Krawzak said. "A lot of good combinations. Which a number of players are creating of things."

Palatine (1-0) got its two goals from Melanie Simon and Ashley Donselaar.

Grant 2, Harvard 2: Addy Karpilovsky and Nicole Stigler scored for Grant (1-1-1) in the nonconference match.

Grayslake Central 2, Highland Park 1: Grace Herrmann and Maddie Mussay scored for the Rams in the nonconference match.

Amanda Kocialkowski and Maura Fitzgerald had assists for Grayslake Central.

"Highland Park made it difficult for us to create chances in the first half with their defensive shape and organization, but we were able to break the deadlock just before halftime," Rams coach Jamie Martin said. "Scoring our second goal so early in the second half gave us a solid platform to build on, although conceding immediately after missing a good opportunity to make the score 3-0 put us under a lot of pressure toward the end of the game. Overall I was very proud of the girls game management and seeing the game out to walk away with a win."
