Fire acquire forward Sapong

The Chicago Fire acquired veteran forward C.J. Sapong from the Philadelphia Union for $400,000 in MLS allocation money.

Sapong is signed for the 2019 season with a club option for 2020. He brings much-needed depth to the Fire front line.

Sapong, 30, has 56 goals and 23 assists in eight MLS seasons. He has made 233 appearances.

"C.J. brings a different skill set to our attacking options," said Fire president and general manager Nelson Rodriguez in a team statement. "We can now be more varied in how we attack."

The Fire opens the season March 2 at the Los Angeles Galaxy. The home opener is March 9 vs. Orlando City SC.
