Sawyer's 33 lead Stevenson past Mundelein

Freshman guard Simone Sawyer poured in a season-high 33 points, leading Stevenson's girls basketball team to a 62-41 win over host Mundelein in North Suburban Conference action on Saturday.

Avery King added 17 points for the Patriots (8-4, 2-4). Sawyer, who scored 22 points twice in the Willowbrook tournament, made 14 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and went 2 of 3 from the foul line.

Mundelein (5-9, 2-5) was led by Kendall Klatt's 19 points. Morgan Frank had 11 points for the Mustangs, who have lost three in a row and six of their last seven.

Libertyville 46, Lake Zurich 22: Maddie Spaulding scored 9 points to lead a balanced attack, and the host Wildcats held the Bears to 8 points in the second half of the North Suburban Conference game.

Libertyville improved to 10-3 and completed the first half of NSC play with a 7-0 record. Margaret Buchert and Abigail Frea each had 7 points in the win, while Lydia Crow scored 6 points on a pair of 3-pointers.

"Our defense was the difference for us today," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said.

Ella Gilbertson had 10 points to lead Lake Zurich (7-7, 3-3).

Zion-Benton 56, Warren 39: The host Zee-Bees improved to 10-1 and 5-1 in the North Suburban Conference.

Warren (3-10, 2-3) received 11 points apiece from Macy Kocen (three 3-pointers) and Jataia Harris (two 3-pointers).

Round Lake 57, Johnsburg 53: At McHenry's West Campus, Diane Flade scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Panthers won their second game of the day in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

It gave Round Lake (8-6) one more win than it had all of last season.

Emily Etherington and Samantha Nicoline added 10 points apiece for the Panthers, who were tied with the Skyhawks 39-39 after three quarters. Courtney Greenwood scored 5 of her 9 points in the fourth for Round Lake, Nicoline scored 6 points in the fourth, and Flade hit a 3.

Round Lake resumes the tournament at 5 p.m. Monday against Crystal Lake South at McHenry.

Round Lake 36, DeKalb 30: At McHenry's West Campus, Emily Etherington scored 15 points to lead the Panthers in their first game of the day in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

Freshman Amari Cole had 8 points for the Panthers.

Marengo 49, Wauconda 33: At Richmond-Burton, playing their second game of the day as part of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic, the Bulldogs saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

Allie Tylka had 11 points for Wauconda (9-3), which also got 8 points and 8 rebounds from Kiley Szmajda.

"We looked tired and were a bit slow in the second game of the day," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "Marengo got out to an 8-1 lead in the first 1:30 of the game, and we were never able to cut into the lead in the first half. However, the girls didn't let up and played a great third quarter. Tremendous energy and intensity. Our defense was tough and led to some quick baskets. We outscored them 17-10. Unfortunately, we ran out of gas and couldn't keep that tempo into the fourth."

Wauconda resumes the tournament on Monday with a 6:30 p.m. game against Prairie Ridge at Richmond-Burton.

Wauconda 64, Hoffman Estates 50: At Richmond-Burton, Allie Tylka scored a season-high 30 points (two 3-pointers) and added 5 rebounds and 6 steals, as the Bulldogs opened the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic with a win.

Freshman Jessie Pakaski added 13 points and 7 rebounds for Wauconda, which won its fourth game in a row.

"We played a good first game against Hoffman Estates," Bulldogs coach Jaime Dennis said. "They had a post player that required us to make some adjustments. Allie Tylka carried us on her back and made things happen on defense."

Crystal Lake Central 43, Lakes 28: At Richmond-Burton, the Eagles lost their second game of the day in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic, after winning their opener.

Mia Edwards had 11 points for Lakes (5-10).

"Give credit to Crystal Lake Crystal's ball press and half-court defense," Eagles coach Brian Phelan said. "They made it hard for us this afternoon."

Lakes 42, Richmond-Burton 37: At Richmond-Burton, Kylie Jozwik scored 14 points, and the Eagles opened the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic with a win.

Sara Smith and Taylor Lehman each scored 9 points in the win.

"Good early-morning road win today," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "Made some shots and took care of the ball. Defense played well."
