Prospect's Fleming will take her golf talents to Oakland U.

Add another girls golfer from Prospect High School's prestigious program to the college ranks.

Four-time Mid-Suburban League all-conference selection Emily Fleming has signed a letter of intent to play at Oakland University in Michigan.

Oakland head coach Alyssa Gaudio is excited for Fleming to join her Golden Grizzlies' program next season.

"Emily had a great career at Prospect High School," Gaudio said. "And she has been a tremendous leader in her senior year. I'm thrilled to have her join our squad."

During that senior year, Fleming qualified for the Class AA state championship as an individual.

Knights coach Jim Hamann, who has steered the program to seven MSL crowns, knew about Fleming's abilities well before she landed a spot on his roster.

She was tournament champion in the MSL summer tournament in 2018 and played in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour and Indiana Elite tournaments.

"We saw Emily's potential at our sixth and eighth grade camps" Hamann said. "Emily made varsity as a freshman and she was mentored by some great leaders. I know the alumni are very proud of Emily."

One highlight of Fleming's career came at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course when she recorded five birdies in one round.

"During her junior and senior years, Emily was one of the players providing leadership to the younger players," Hamann said. "Emily is a great player now, but her ceiling is much higher than most people know."

Hamann sees a right future for Fleming.

"I am confident that Emily is going to be a huge part of the success that Oakland women's golf will have," he said. "Emily has a great team with a motivated self, supportive parents and family, hard working coaches and a great golf professional (Eric Pick at MPGC). Now it is on to bigger and better things. We are very excited for Emily and Oakland University."

1,000 for Sotos

Lake Forest senior forward Danny Sotos (Conant) became the 23rd player in program history to reach the milestone of 1,000 points when he netted 25 in the Forresters' 108-100 loss to visiting Grinnell College.

Sotos entered the contest needing 19 points, more than he had scored in any of his previous six games, against the Pioneers. He had 9 points at halftime and scored his 10th and 11th of the second half on a layup with 10:27 to play.

Sotos shot 10-for-12 from the field, pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year, added 5 assists and a pair of blocked shots, and did not commit a turnover in the game.

It was the Midwest Conference opener for Lake Forest (3-1, 0-1).

Teeing off

Barington athletic director Mike Obsuszt has announced the hiring of the school's new boys and girls coaches.

Tim Martin has been named the girls golf coach while Bryan Tucker will take over the boys program.

They are guidance counselors at Barrington High School.

Martin has served as the assistant coach under Jodi Schoeck for the past four seasons and is also a boys freshman basketball coach.

Tucker has served in the boys golf program as an assistant for Mike Kallenbach the past six years and is the head boys basketball coach at Barrington. He recently won his 400th career game when the Broncos defeated Loyola at the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving tournament.

"Tim and Bryan have done a great job as assistant coaches in our golf programs," Obsuszt said. "They have learned under two great coaches in Jodi Schoeck and Mike Kallenbach. I feel our program is in great hands."

Women's basketball

On the back of double-doubles from senior Deanna Kuzmanic (Wheeling) and junior Katelynn Thomas, Alabama-Birmingham improved to 8-1 with a 91-48 win over McNeese State at Bartow Arena.

Kuzmanic finished the game with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists while Thomas tallied 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds.

Kuzmanic has finished in double figure scoring in every game this season, while Thomas, a native of Birmingham (AL), has found the double figure scoring column in the previous eight games.

The duo are the first Blazers to record a double-double in the same game since Kara Rawls (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Imani Johnson (10 points, 11 rebounds) did it against Florida Atlantic on Jan. 27, 2018.

"Two double-doubles in one game is pretty impressive," said Blazers coach Randy Norton said. "With Deanna I look at her 11 assists and one turnover and have to think that is impressive. I was on her a little bit because I felt like she passed up a bunch of shots, but that is what she felt like today. When you score 91 points and she has 11 assists, I am going to take that."

• Illinois State 6-foot-2 junior Megan Talbot (Barrington) played 21 minutes in a season-opening loss to Southern Illinois Edwardsville with a broken foot before an X-ray revealed a fracture.

She is currently sidelined for about four to six weeks.

Talbot, an all-area player for Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, started 26 of 30 games as a freshman last season and averaged 7.4 points and 5.6 rebounds.

"We will play a little bit smaller and a little bit different," said Redbirds coach Kristen Gillespie on the school's website.

• Jimmy Colloton (Rolling Meadows) is in his fifth season as an assistant for the Navy women's basketball coaching staff.

Navy was near the top of the standings again in 2017-18, Colloton's fourth year on staff.

As part of the Mids' 25-8 record, they went 13-5 in Patriot League play and placed third in the conference. As a result of Navy's regular-season performance, the team qualified for and played in the 2018 WNIT event. Navy's 25 wins were the most in program history.

Baseball

Buffalo Grove senior third baseman Riley Rundquist has made a verbal commitment to play for Heartland Community College in Normal.

Rundquist enjoyed an all-area season as a junior, once again hitting for power.

He matched the 6 homers he hit as a sophomore. He also had 32 RBI to go with his .341 batting average.

"Riley has continued where he started as a freshman as one of the most explosive hitters in the state," Buffalo Grove coach Tim Miller told Daily Herald correspondent Dick Quagliano. "His ability to drive the baseball is something you rarely see from a high school player. When you think of Riley as a player his hitting is what stands out, but he has tremendous hands."

• In other recruiting news, Fremd senior pitcher Victor Fugiu has made a verbal commitment to Parkland College in Champaign.
