Leyden wins tourney title

Less than 10 days into the season, Leyden's girls basketball team already has a championship on its resume.

The Eagles won the Addison Trail/Fenton/Elgin tournament title on Monday night with a 59-54 win over Fenton at Addison Trail High School.

Coach Stephanie Kuzmanic's club went 3-0 in the tourney, also notching wins over Elgin (61-16) and Addison Trail (53-41).

Leyden sophomore Yaritza Frias scored a game-high 22 points and senior teammate Gaby Hurtado added 11.

Frias and Hurtado were named to the all-tourney team along with teammates Evelyn Abundes and Kassy Perez.

Elk Grove 56, Sycamore 34: Elk Grove raised its record to 2-2 in the Vernon Hills tournament as junior guard Megan Murray collected a game-high 20 points with one 3-pointer.

Other top scorers for the Grenadiers were sophomore Isabella Tierney (10 points), freshman Lily Duckmann (8 points), senior Rachel Kandefer (8 points) and sophomore guard Olivia Masnica (6 points). Duckmann and senior Jaela Priester also had 3-pointers for EG.
