Girls volleyball: Rosary forfeits regional game

Rosary is hosting a Class 3A girls volleyball regional this week, but the Royals won't be playing in it.

Rosary had to forfeit its regional opener against Ridgewood on Tuesday night for playing more than the 35 regular season games allowed.

"I feel so bad for the kids," Rosary athletic director Mary Lou Kunold said. "A majority of the parents were saying, 'mistakes happen.'"

Kunold said the mistake came to light when another athletic director asked what her team's record was, and at the time it was 20-18. The Royals still had two regular season games left, which the Royals went ahead and played and won last week even though they went down as forfeits.

"I wanted our kids to have a senior night," Kunold said. "Bottom line, we didn't want our season to end that way."

Rosary finished the season 22-18 though it will go down as 18-17 as every match after 35 goes down as a forfeit.

Kunold said she normally enters the same four tournaments each year, all 4A tourneys hosted by Waubonsie Valley, Plainfield North, St. Charles East and the Wheaton Classic. But when Waubonsie Valley stopped hosting, she signed up at Plano; then Plainfield South took over the Waubonsie Valley tournament and the Royals played in that as well, giving them five tournaments and too many games.
