Girls cross country: Warren nabs title at Libertyville

Warren's girls cross country team made it back-to-back weekends of first-place finishes as the Blue Devils won the Class 3A Libertyville regional with 56 points Saturday after winning the North Suburban Conference crown last weekend.

Stevenson edged the host Wildcats 65-66 for second place while fourth-place Mundelein (76 points), fifth-place Wheeling (135), and sixth-place Buffalo Grove (178) also earned trips to the Hoffman Estates sectional next Saturday.

Stevenson's Natalie Sorenson and Kendall Roberts went 1-2 in the 3-mile race at Adler Park followed by Warren's Raina Rice in third, and Libertyville's Bree Ponchak in fourth. Wheeling's Christina Pierini placed fifth followed by Warren's Athena McGinn in sixth, and Mundelein's Jordyn Miller in seventh.

Class 2A

At Antioch's Class 2A regional, perennial power Vernon Hills rolled to the team title at Fox River Park with 37 points with second-place Lakes (95 points) nipping third-place Grayslake Central (96), and fourth-place Carmel Catholic (97) at the finish line.

The Cougars were led by Hannah Ray (fourth), Payton Makowskyj (fifth), Emma Wakefield (sixth), and Leah Wilkowski (eighth). Lakes' Brooke Stromsland won the race in 18:20 to easily outdistance Grayslake North teammates Kelli Tosic (second), and Caroline Riss (third). Bryn Sato led the Rams in ninth while Brigid Hull was Carmel's top runner in 10th.
