Girls volleyball: Fremd wins Grayslake North Invite

Make it another 20-win season for Fremd's girls volleyball team and coach Curt Pinley.

The Vikings defeated Mundelein 25-21 25-18 to win the championship of the Grayslake North Invite, raising their record to 24-5 and giving Pinley his 460th win with the girls program in 20 seasons.

After two-set wins over the Grayslake North junior varsity, Mundelein and Ridgewood in pool, the Mid-Suburban League West co-champs defeated the host Knights 25-11 25-11 in the semifinals.

Pumpkin Invite: Palatine (20-13) took sixth place at the Maine West Pumpkin Invite, getting wins over Downers Grove South and Maine West.

Haley Holz (57 kills), Emily Campe (44 kills) Sarah Elischer (20 kills) and Karina Szafraniec (14 kills) led the attack for the Pirates while Allison Drake handed out 107 assists and collected 9 aces and 26 digs. Jillian Smith paced the back row with 56 digs. Elischer and Holz led with 7 blocks and Szafraniec had 5.

Hersey (22-7) finished 3-2 to notch seventh place. The Huskies earned wins over Highland Park, Evanston and Maine West and were led on attack by junior Kati Kaburov (50 kills, 4 aces, 5 blocks, 26 digs) and senior Alessia Olhava 26 kills, 6 aces, 1 block, 42 digs).

Other top performers were Kaiya Eshoo (95 assists, 10 kills, 8 aces, 2 blocks, 30 digs), Maddie Mullin (63 digs, 5 assists, 1 ace), Juliette van den Herik (11 kills, 14 blocks), Janine Boyan (12 kills, 6 blocks), Kate Lubbe (4 kills, 11 blocks, 8 digs), Katie Moreno (1 ace, 16 digs), Karol Wojdacz (2 aces, 10 digs) and Lauren Solans (3 aces, 6 digs).

"We had our opportunities against Lyons and Batavia (Huskies' two losses on Saturday) but struggled with consistency," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill, who notched her 971st career win in the tourney. "We had a solid bounce-back game against Maine West. Overall it was a good tourney for us."

Maine West (16-17) defeated Belleville West 25-16, 9-25, 15-9 and Hoffman Estates 25-13, 25-19 to advance to the first place on Saturday where the Warriors fell in two sets to Lockport, Palatine and Hersey.

Ally Block (51 assists, 38 digs), Reilly Olson (29 kills, 25 digs), Kaylin Johnson (55 digs), Angela Dugalic (23 kills) and Adriana Lopez (8 aces, 18 digs) were among the leaders for the Warriors in their five matches.

Conant (13-20) earned two-set wins over Maine East and Taft to finish 2-3.

Elgin Invite: Leyden went 4-1 and took second place with wins over St. Edward, Elgin, Elgin Academy and Dundee-Crown.

Senior outside Destiny Corral (44 kills, 5 aces), senior libero Bea Verin (35 digs, 2 aces), junior middle hitter Kinga Nowaczyk (15 kills, 13 blocks), junior right side Summer Mohammad (20 kills), junior setter Jocelyn Escamilla (96 assists, 4 kills, 3 aces) and junior outside Elle Engelke (16 kills) were the leaders for the Eagles.

Autumnfest: Mid-Suburban West co-champion Barrington went 3-2 in the Glenbard East Autumnfest, raising its record to 23-11. Senior Peyton Tilly was named to the all-tourney team. The Fillies defeated Crystal Lake South, West Chicago and Oak Park-River Forest. Schaumburg (11-17) was 1-4 in the event.
