Girls volleyball: Buffalo Grove, Hersey, Fremd earn co-titles

For the first time since 1976, Buffalo Grove's girls volleyball team will play for a Mid-Suburban League championship

Coach Matt Priban's Bison earned the MSL East co-championship with 15-year defending champion Hersey by defeating host Rolling Meadows 25-19, 25-20 on Thursday night.

BG also earned its first 20-win season under its seventh year head coach.

The Bison (20-10, 9-1) will host Barrington (20-9, 9-1), which tied for first in the MSL West with defending champion Fremd.

BG and Barrington earned their title berths due to the tiebreaker (sets won in head-to -head competition between the tied teams).

Shannon Coglianese (9 kills) Claire Ferris (8 kills), Lauren Horvath (4 kills) and Abby Kim (3 kills) led the BG attack set by Maggie Streckert (24 assists), who also had 2 aces along with Gianna Loverde.

Eleanor Errico (8 kills), Ashlyn Ryan (7 kills) and Elise Kowalski (5 kills led RM (16-18, 5-5) which received 18 assist from Natalie Klancnik and 11 digs from Sophia Salemi.

Hersey d. Wheeling: Hersey earned at least a share of the MSL East title for the 16th straight year as the Huskies (19-5, 9-1) earned a 25-5, 25-13 triumph at Wheeling.

Kati Kaburov led the Huskies with 13 kills, 2 blocks 3 digs while Kaiya Eshoo had 19 assists, 2 kills, 4 digs and 1 block.

Other top performers for the Huskies were Juliette Vandenherik (2 kills), Janine Boyan (3 blocks), Alessia Olhava (3 kills 3 aces 10 digs), Karolina Wojdacz (9 digs), Kate Lubbe (1 block), Katie Moreno (8 digs, 1 ace) and Maddie Mullin (2 aces, 12 digs)

"We ended our East division season playing some great volleyball," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "We are happy to be co- champions for the MSL East with an opportunity to play the West division co-champion Fremd on Tuesday."

Nicole Nguyen and Kamila Staniszewski each had 2 kills for the Wildcats (12-17, 3-7), who received 9 assists from Grace Zambrano and 2 blocks from Nosa Igiehon.

Fremd d. Schaumburg: Defending MSL West champ Fremd earned a co share of the title as the host Vikings finished with a 9-1 record and moved to 19-5 overall after the 25-11, 25-23 triumph.

Schaumburg finished 5-5 in the West.

Breslin Reid and Heidi Sayre each put down 8 kills for Fremd while Rylen Reid added 5. Lydia Vander Ark (12 assists) and Rian Baker (10 assists) set the attack.

Maddie Aichinger led the back row with 11 digs. Jules Tangney had 2 blocks. Claudia Wala and Sayre each had one.

Prospect d. Elk Grove: Host Prospect (16-14, 4-6) earned a 25-17, 25-18 to cap play in the MSL East as Sarah Skaggs handed out 21 assists in an offense led by Emma Cogan (7 kills), Grace Cacini (6 kills) and Elizabeth Abraham (5) kills.

Annie Wiley had 3 kills and Sloane Petlak 2 for the Knights.

Cacini and Cogan each had 2 aces while Ashley Adams led the back row with 12 digs

Rachel Kandefer led EG (2-25, 0-10) with 5 kills. Alissa Kurczak served 2 aces and Megan Murray had one with 9 digs. Lili Duckmann handed out 5 assists.

Conant d. Hoffman Estates: Natalie Jurgenson (9 kills), Hari Yuri (6 aces, 10 digs), Abbey DiSalvo (3 kills) and Bella DiPaolo (2 kills) helped lead visiting Conant (11-17, 3-7) to a 25-16, 25-7 triumph over the Hawks (1-17, 0-10).

Latin School d. St. Viator: The visiting Latin School posted a 29-27, 17-25, 14-25 over St. Viator (16-18), which was led on attack by Kate Nottoli (11 kills), Carrie Leazer (10 kills) and Vicky Gorny (8 kills).

Taylor Pfaller served 5 aces and collected 10 digs while teammate Erin Aldana handed out 34 assists and had 10 digs.
