Girls volleyball: Barrington notches third at Huntley Invite

Barrington's girls volleyball team outlasted Jacobs 25-10, 22-25, 25-21 to capture third place on Saturday at the Huntley Invite.

"Playing in the third place match is hard after losing a chance to play in the championship match, " said Barrington coach Michelle Jakubowski. "To go 4-1 in this tournament is quite an accomplishment. I am very proud of the girls. We were very tired in the third place match but battled through to get the win."

Barrington (18-9) was paced by senior outside hitter Peyton Tilley with 17 kills and 5 blocks. Leading Jacobs (10-12) was Maggie Wallenberger with 14 kills.

"We had a long layoff between the semifinal match and the third place match and we got off to a slow start," said Jacobs coach Lisa Dwyer. "We bounced back in the second game and I am very happy with the way we played in the tournament. To finish fourth in this tournament is very respectable."

Conant went 2-3 with a pair of two-set wins over Harlem and Rockford Boylan.

Top attackers for the Cougars (10-15) were Natalie Jurgenson (27 kills), Yuri Hara (24 kills), Jessica Sharp (19 kills) and Chikere Oduocha (12 kills). They took their cues from setter Fiona Fennelly, who handed out 64 assists while also tabulating 30 digs and 12 blocks. Hara and Jurgenson each served 6 aces while Hara had 74 digs and Jurgenson 57.

At Antioch: Palatine went 4-1 at the Antioch Invite with three two-set wins and a 26-27, 27-25, 15-13 win over Belvidere North. The Pirates' only loss came in three sets to Lakes.

Leading the Pirates (17-9) on attack were Emily Campe (44 kills), Haley Holz (43 kills), Karina Szafraniec (15 kills) and Sarah Elischer (14 kills) as Allison Drake collected 136 assists. Holz also served 16 aces from by Campe (7), Jillian Smith (6) and Drake (5).

Smith led the back row with 69 digs followed by Holz (49), Campe (42) and Drake (28).

Elischer's 9 blocks led the Pirates followed by Szafraniec (8), Campe (8) and Holz (7).

At Glenbrook North: Buffalo Grove (18-10) took fourth place at Glenbrook North's Discovery tournament. Maine South defeated the Bison 25-18, 25-18 and New Trier stopped BG 25-13, 25-16 for third place.

Top attackers against Maine South were Claire Ferriss (8 kills), Shannon Coglianese (5 kills) and Lauren Horvath (3 kills) as setter Maggie Streckert handed out 12 assists. Nina Masciopinto collected 11 digs.

Ferriss came back with 7 kills against the Trevians and Horvath added 2. Streckert compiled 6 assists and Kristen Belias and Masciopinto each had 6 digs.

Maine West (14-14) went 2-3 in the invite as Ally Block collected 61 assists with 26 digs and 12 kills while Reilly Olson posted 18 kills with 18 digs and 5 aces. Other top performers for the Warriors were Kaylin Johnson (48 digs), Angela Dugalic (19 kills, 6 blocks), Yesenia Santiago (9 kills, 7 blocks) and Brianna Migaczewski (6 aces).

Prospect (15-13) placed 13th with a 3-2 record that included wins over York, Wauconda and Evanston. Emma Cogan led the attack with 23 kills, followed by Elizabeth Abraham (15), Annie Wiley (14), Grace Cacini (13) and Sloane Petlak (8).

Petlak led the Knights with 9 blocks while Cogan (30 digs) was the leader in aces with 7. Ashley Adams collected 36 digs while Taylor Skaggs directed the offense with 56 assists and she had 30 digs.

Harper wins twice: Harper College defeated Southwest Iowa 25-23, 13-25, 25-22, 25-12 and posted a 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-6 win over the Olivet Nazerene junior varsity team.

Abby Wemple (13 kills) and Kayla Agoranos (9) led the attack vs. Southwest Iowa with Kathleen Gueco handing out 22 assists and Agoranas 15.

Karolina Sas and Araganos led the back row with 19 digs followed by Gueco (13) and Jessica Smith (12).

Wemple put down 17 kills against Olivet Nazarene while Mackenzie Bush had 11 and Gueco 7 along with 23 assists.

Sas led the back row with 23 digs while Gueco was 16-of-17 serving with 3 aces.

"In addition to some flashes of brilliance, we are actually improving and becoming more consistent," said Hawks coach Bob Visloet. "The second match was a nice win after falling behind 0-2 to a good team."
