Girls golf: Barrington's MSL title fitting for retiring Schoeck

Two of the top girls golfers in Jodi Schoeck's 32-year hall of fame career at Barrington sure gave their retiring coach a memorable final Mid-Suburban League meet on Tuesday at Palatine Hills Golf Course.

Schoeck watched her top two Fillies - junior Caroline Smith and senior Nicole Ciskowski - dead heat with 70s in regulation play on the par 72 layout.

The future NCAA Division I golfers then needed three playoff holes to settle the individual title in dramatic fashion.

Smith, a Wake Forest recruit, converted a 7-foot birdie putt on the par 4 No. 10 hole to win her third straight MSL crown over her friend and teammate Ciskowski, a Wisconsin recruit.

"These are two champion golfers," Schoeck said. "They're such great friends, our captains and team leaders. They are two respected national players. To have to tie for 18 holes and be pitted against one another is a tough road. But they both played it like champions, It was so much fun to watch. The drama was palpable."

When it was over, the Fillies celebrated their fourth straight MSL crown and 14th overall under Schoeck.

Barrington carded a 293 to top Prospect (329), the East division champ for the 12th time in 14 seasons under coach Jim Hamann, who has also steered the Knights to seven MSL crowns.

Finishing behind the two Fillies were Wheeling's Adrienne Rohwedder (72), Prospect's Kelly Kavanagh (73), Barrington's Sophia Sulkar (76), Barrington's Olivia Lee (77), Wheeling's Symantha Rohwedder (78) Barrington's Mara Janess (80) and Barrington's Ishani Majmudar (80).

Buffalo Grove (361), with first-year coach Jeff Grybash, took third place getting career best scores from Alisa Patel (81), Zoe Childs (90) and Eva Rutterschmidt (92).

"This was a great day for our seniors and our team," Schoeck added. "They've been on varsity four years and had a pretty awesome conference record (88-0)."

Smith became the first Filly to win three MSL crowns in a career.

"I didn't really enjoy it," Smith said of having to outlast her friend for the crown. "But we had to play (in playoff). It's going to be so sad when she (Schoeck) leaves because she is the best coach in the world. I'm going to miss her a lot."

"It was very intense," Ciskowski said of the overtime golf with her teammate. "It was something I've never experienced before. Caroline and I play together all the time. You just never know. Maybe we'll face each other again one day in a college tournament."

In addition to Kavanagh, the Knights also placed Emily Fleming (82), Emma Gries (86), Emma Preissing (88) and Amanda Stein (90) in the Top 20 for all-conference status.

"I'm very proud of five all-conference golfers," Hamann said. "Kelly was phenomenal. She had one of the all-time best ball-striking performances I can remember. If we can get her putting turned around a little, she can win the whole thing. She was very fun to watch out there today. She was a machine. She's had a tremendous season.

"Obviously, she played Caroline, who is a phenomenal player and Nicole had a great round. So congratulations to them, Jodi and Barrington. They had a phenomenal score. We're just going to prepare for the regional. I like the direction we're headed. I believe in our girls. We will be scoring much lower very soon."
