Zion-Benton deals Mundelein setback

Clearly, there was a turning point.

Mundelein's redheaded quarterback, Isaac Wellman, was in control. He had completed a 45-yard pass play to Eli Daugs and completed the touchdown drive with an 11-yard scoring play to Daugs.

On the next possession for the Mustangs, Wellman took a blow from the Zion-Benton defense. He was done for the game.

Zion-Benton (2-3, 1-2) took full advantage of this situation. The Zee-Bees posted a surprising 36-9 rout of Mundelein on Friday night in Mundelein.

Zion quarterback, Jerome Crawford, survived this contest. He scored one touchdown.

"We started slowly tonight,'' Crawford said. "Mundelein played us tough but we started to make big plays."

After one quarter, Mundelein (2-3. 1-2) was up 9-7. The Mustangs handed the quarterback job to former freshman quarterback, Shawn Patrick.

"I got into three plays last week,'' Patrick said. "I'm actually a better runner than a passer. I didn't know many plays. They tried to teach me some plays at halftime."

Wellman had 56 yards passing when he was sidelined. With Patrick in the driver's seat, the Mustangs marched briefly into Zion territory on 10 plays. Patrick had half of those carries.

Zion's offense was more balanced. Crawford threw a few passes but mostly relied on the strong running of Jordan Chisum (22-123).

"He's really good,'' Crawford noted.

Chisum's 12-yard gallop put the Zee-Bees up for good midway through the second quarter.

Zion kicker Cole Kirby nailed a 40-yard field goal before halftime and the Zion lead was 17-9.

The big play of the third quarter came on defense. Zion's Andrew Norris picked off a rare Patrick pass and took it 36 yards for the score.

The fourth quarter was highlighted by a bizarre transfer of the ball. Zion made a rare mistake on a punt and set the Mundelein offense on the Zion 10. On the next play, Mundelein fumbled and Zion's Tyler Creamer scooped it up and raced 50 yards downfield.

Crawford sneaked the ball over from the one to finish the game's scoring.
