Lakes graduate Greenfield makes immediate impact at North Central

North Central College's football team scored its most points in a season opener in more than 100 years on Saturday and Lakes graduate Ethan Greenfield was part of the 70-point barrage.

The Cardinals' freshman running back gave his team the lead for good at 14-7, when he covered the final 41 yards of a scoring drive with two rushing attempts, including a 20-yard TD carry with 1:38 left in the first quarter.

North Central went on to a 70-14 rout at Lake Forest College, scoring 56 unanswered points and putting together a string of nine consecutive touchdown drives to put the contest out of reach early.

The last time the Cardinals had scored more points was their 1915 season opener when they defeated Lewis Institute 116-0.

North Central's 637 yards of total offense on Saturday ranks as the sixth-highest single-game total in school history.

Greenfield's TD was the first of his collegiate career.

As Lakes' lead running back a year ago, he was named Class 5A all-state.

He rushed for 1,225 yards and 16 touchdowns on 133 carries. He also caught 15 passes for 230 yards and 5 touchdowns. On kickoffs, he had 10 returns for 170 yards.

And on defense, Greenfield had 34 tackles, including 4 for a loss. He also had an interception and a fumble recovery.

"He was a standout on both sides of the ball," Lakes coach Jordan Eder said of Greenfield following the season. "He is extremely dedicated and hard working and it showed this season. Ethan fought through every snap. He made an incredible impact on each and every game and is a special player."
