Warren, Glenbard North will try to play a third day

For those who like their entertainment in installments, the Warren and Glenbard North football teams have a show for you.

For a second straight night the nonconference football game was suspended. The game was scoreless when it was called Friday night due to lightning. On Saturday Warren held a 19-0 lead at halftime when the stands and field were cleared for a weather delay, not to return.

Episode 3 airs at noon Sunday in Carol Stream.

"Between coaching and being an athletic director I've been at this 20 years," said Glenbard North athletic director Matt Bowser. "We've been canceled before, for sure, but never two times in a row. Just couldn't find a good window to play."

It brought to mind the 2013 game between Riverside-Brookfield and St. Francis when a combination of poor weather and lack of available officials required three days to complete the contest and open St. Francis' Kuhn Memorial Stadium. That game also was completed on a Sunday.

As far as Glenbard North coach Ryan Wilkens goes, "I've never had to do that before," he said.

"Playing the same team three days in a row is out of the ordinary, but at least we've got time to see what we're doing wrong, try to fix it for tomorrow," he said.

First-quarter touchdown passes of 38 and 30 yards from Blue Devils quarterback Phil Hird to receiver Casey Cobe paced Warren's 19-0 lead.

Warren (0-1) capitalized on Friday's in-game scouting report.

"Just four plays," Hird said.

"It was third down and we threw kind of like a Hail Mary," said Hird, who restarted Saturday with the ball on Glenbard North's 41-yard line and 9 minutes, 28 seconds on the clock. "We completed it, so we kind of had energy coming into this game. We were ready. We were real ready."

With 19.8 seconds before halftime, Warren's Martin Walker Jr. burst through a huge hole created by left guard Matt Wilkins and center Matt Rich for a 14-yard touchdown run that made the score 19-0.

Probably the highlight for Glenbard North (0-1) was stadium announcer Don Depa's report that former Panthers and Northwestern University star running back Justin Jackson made the Los Angeles Chargers' roster, which drew a loud cheer.

Perhaps Sunday's episode will have further highlights.

"We wish we would have been able to play Friday night, just waited it out," said Warren coach Brian McNulty, a 1995 Naperville Central graduate. "But it's their school and it's their choice so we have to respect that and get ready to play for a third day."
