Girls volleyball: West Aurora beats Joliet Catholic to win own tournament

West Aurora's girls volleyball team won five straight matches Saturday to win the Blackhawk Invitational.

The Blackhawks (9-3) knocked off Joliet Catholic in the championship 26-24, 25-21. West Aurora beat St. Ignatius 25-19, 25-19 in the semifinals.

In pool play, West Aurora defeated Plainfield South. 25-27, 25-22, 25-22, Romeoville 22-25, 25-16, 15-12, and Genoa-Kingston, 25-12, 25-20.

Kendra Battle led West Aurora with 47 kills for the tournament. She added 5 aces, 7 blocks and 19 digs.

Olivia McPherson was next with 20 kills, plus 4 aces, 2 blocks and 32 digs.

Jenna Millen topped the Blackhawks with 50 assists and served 10 aces with 12 digs.

West Aurora also got strong play from Hannah Gove (1 ace, 12 kills, 8 blocks), Kiarra McPhearson (7 kills, 30 assists), Lauren Greenwood (6 aces, 49 diggs), Maddie Schmidt (3 aces, 11 kills, 8 digs) and Chloe Myers (3 aces, 12 kills, 6 blocks in 2 matches).

At the same tournament, South Elgin went 2-3 and is now 5-3 on the season. The Storm's two wins came over Sycamore and Streamwood while they lost to St. Ignatius, Plainfield East and Joliet Catholic.

Hayley Fisher (31 kills, 35 digs), McKayla Geraghty (10 kills, 17 digs), Emily Wellman (10 aces, 47 digs) and Kendal Richardson (36 assists, 9 aces) were among the key contributors for South Elgin.

Champaign Centennial tournament: Kaneland defeated Champaign Central 25-23, 25-14 to win the Champaign Centennial championship.

The Knights improved to 9-3. They also defeated Centennial, Rochester, Rantoul and Monticello, all in 2 sets.

Conant Invite: St. Charles East went 4-1, losing its only match in pool play 22-25, 25-20, 15-8 to eventual champion Fremd.

The loss sent the Saints to the Silver bracket, which they won by beating Harlem 25-7, 25-23 and Mundelein 25-14, 25-15.

St. Charles East is 6-1 this season.

St. Charles North d. Prairie Ridge: In action Friday night, St. Charles North won a tight 28-26, 25-22 match that they trailed 24-21 in the opening set.

Katie Lanz served 5 aces, and Kyla Lannert added 2. Gigi Crescenzo had 9 kills, while Lanz contributed 8, Lannert had 3, and middles Brigid McCarthy and Cailey Johns each had 1. Maddie Gorniak and Crescenzo both had 14 digs for the North Stars (7-1).
