Chicago Dogs lose despite great pitching

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Trevor Simms logged seven innings of two-run ball, but the Chicago Dogs lost 2-1 to the St. Paul Saints Wednesday night at CHS Field.

Simms turned in his fifth consecutive quality start but the Chicago bats mustered only one run on seven hits as the right-hander suffered his second consecutive loss.

St. Paul scored the game's first runs on a two-out, two-run single from Joey Wong in the bottom of the second inning.

Chicago look primed to respond immediately in the top of the third frame as the Dogs picked up four straight base hits to begin the inning. The fourth hit, a single from Joe Benson, drove in Rey Gonzalez from third base.

With the bases still loaded, Treysen Vavra popped out to first base, and then one batter later, Tony Rosselli did the same. Kenny Wilson was thrown out at third base however, after Rosselli's ball was dropped, ending the inning and the Chicago threat.

Chicago would tally only three base hits the rest of the game, as St. Paul starter Chris Nunn, and relievers Mike Devine and Zack Jones worked the final six innings scoreless for the Saints.

Nunn earned the win-his seventh of the year-by tossing six innings and allowing just the lone run. Jones earned the save, his tenth of the season.

With the loss, Chicago falls to 42-53 on the season, while St. Paul moves to 57-38 with the win. Wes Torrez will start for the Dogs, while Ryan Zimmerman gets the ball for St. Paul.
