Girls volleyball: Carmel outlasts Stevenson

Carmel Catholic's girls volleyball team couldn't stop Sophie Sorenson, but the visiting Corsairs pulled out a thrilling win on Thursday night, outlasting Stevenson 31-29, 16-25, 25-19 in nonconference action.

Sorenson slammed 20 kills and also had 5 aces and 10 digs.

Carmel (1-2) was led by junior captain and outside hitter Eileen Tarcha with 11 kills, 2 aces and 8 digs.

"Eileen was active all night long, front row and back row, in our offense," Corsairs coach Dave Pazely said. "She isn't a dominant hitter but makes the ball move well, picking out corners and finding holes in the defense. As our middles started moving offensively the game opened up for our pin hitters too. We still have work to do to improve but it was good to put one in the win column early in the season."

Carmel's other contributors included Annie Bart (4 kills, 2 blocks), Alyssa Dellert (6 kills), Kaitlyn Donton (11 assists), Mya Mainzer (5 kills, 2 aces), Jolina Moisio (16 digs, 2 aces), Casey Needham (6 digs), Caiti Shrofe (5 digs), Tayah Farris (2 kills) and Patti Needham (13 assists).
