Girls volleyball: Beshel, Bullman lead Grayslake Central in opener

Cassidy Beshel had 5 kills and 2 aces, Kate Bullman added 4 kills and 3 blocks, and Grayslake Central's girls volleyball team opened its season with a 25-18, 25-9 win over visiting Zion-Benton in nonconference action on Tuesday night.

Amber Moser tallied 3 kills and 1 ace, and Abby Marassa notched 10 digs for the Rams.

"Great Opening Day win for us against one of the strongest hitters in the county (Illinois-recruit Kennedy Collins)," Grayslake Central coach Jason Janczak said. "We played well in nearly all aspects of the game and are looking forward to building upon this win and getting better."

New Trier d. Libertyville: Peyton O'Brien had 9 assists, 2 blocks and 2 kills, as the Wildcats lost their season opener 25-22, 25-15 in a nonconference match.

Hope Moody pounded 4 kills for Libertyville, which also got 3 kills apiece from Kellie Hopper and Ella Schaffnit. Jenn Formica tallied 13 digs for the Wildcats.

Stevenson d. Barrington: The Patriots captured the season opener 25-21, 25-21, as Sophie Sorenson slammed 9 kills.

Lily Cozzi added 6 kills, while Grace Tully dished out 19 assists and served 3 aces. Stevenson's other contributors included Annie Armgardt (3 kills, 2 solo blocks, 2 assisted blocks), Makayla Uremovich (3 kills) and Abby Keevins (7 digs).

Barrington was led by Peyton Tilly's 8 kills, 1 block and 4 digs. Bailey Madrzyk had 5 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs. Tara Kozak dished out 12 assists for the Fillies, and Paige Ramel has 5 blocks and 2 kills.

Lake Zurich d. Grant: The host Bears won 25-23, 25-18 in a season-opening match.

Grant was led by Megan Mitchell, who was 14-of-14 hitting with 6 kills.

Mundelein d. Wauconda: Taylor Heath had 6 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces, as the Mustangs won 25-21, 26-24 in a season opener for both squads.

Alexis Naddy added 4 kills and 2 aces, and Faith Krabbe had 3 blocks and 6 assists. Mundelein also received 6 assists from Claudia Wilcox and 3 blocks from Brianna Martin. Wilcox served 2 aces as well.

Warren d. Carmel: On Monday night, Dana Lundtveit pounded 11 kills, as the Blue Devils won their season opener 25-23, 25-21.

Ella White had 7 kills for Warren, and Kayla Klemz added 12 assists and 3 aces. The Blue Devils also got 8 digs from Amanda Howe and 2 solo blocks from Ora Cohen.
