Cougars can't muster a hit against Peoria

The Kane County Cougars were no-hit by Peoria Chiefs right-hander Paul Balestrieri in an 8-0 loss on Thursday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.

In the bottom of the first, Yoel Yanqui hit a ball to Peoria first baseman Yariel Gonzalez that zoomed past his glove down the right field line. It was ruled an error and turned out to be the only Cougar base runner of the night. Paul Balestrieri settled in to retire the next 25 Cougar (30-28) batters consecutively. Balestrieri (2-2) completed the Chiefs first no-hitter since 2015, striking out six batters with out a walk.

Scott Hurst hit a lead-off homer in the first inning for the Chiefs. In the third, the Chiefs added three more runs on Angel Moreno's run-scoring single. Nick Plummer added a two-run double. Plummer added two more runs with an RBI single in the seventh. Moreno left the yard on a two-run blast to make it 8-0 in the ninth.

Brian Shaffer (2-4) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Jake Winston recorded one out in the pen. Cole Bartlett hurled the final three innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
