Softball: Grayslake Central fends off Johnsburg
Ashlynn Coleman hit a pinch-hit grand slam during a 7-run fourth inning, and Grayslake Central's softball team rallied to beat upset-minded Johnsburg 12-8 in semifinal action of the Class 3A Johnsburg regional on Wednesday.
The second-seeded Rams advance to Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game against the winner of Thursday's matchup between No. 7 Prairie Ridge and No. 10 Lake View.
Grayslake Central trailed No. 13 Johnsburg 6-1 heading into the bottom of the third but scored twice to cut its deficit in half.
Elisa Koshy finished 3-for-3 for the Rams, and winning pitcher Grace Bradley was 2-for-3 with a double. Nicole Buerger had a single and 2 RBI for Grayslake Central, and Morgan Smigielski doubled and scored twice.
Libertyville 10, Glenbrook South 0: At Glenbrook South, Amanda Page earned her 20th win of the season, as the fourth-seeded Wildcats shut out the host and No. 19 seed in 5 innings in the Class 4A regional semifinal.
Maggie Evers homered and drove in 3 runs for Libertyville (24-7), which advances to Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game against the winner of Thursday's matchup between No. 5 Hersey and No. 12 New Trier.
Page (20-7) issued 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out four. The Wildcats received 2 hits apiece from Sarah Hoyer (triple, 4 RBI), Sarah Bennett, Hannah Hiscox and Christine Zhang.
Antioch 17, Intrinsic Charter 0: At Antioch, the top-seeded Sequoits scored 13 runs in the first inning and knocked off the No. 17 seed in four innings.
Kayla Burkhart, Ashlyn Sundell and Kaylee Schreiner (2 doubles, 2 RBI) were all 2-for-2 for Antioch (25-6). Piper Foote was 1-for-1 with a triple.
The Sequoits advance to their own Class 3A regional final and will play at 11 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Thursday's game between No, 8 CICS/Northtown and No. 9 Resurrection.
Carmel 13, Deerfield 3: At Loyola, Jordan Swiatkowski hit a solo homer, Jessica Dettwiller was 4-for-4 with a triple, and the third-seeded Corsairs won the Class 4A regional semifinal in five innings.
Carmel advances to Saturday's 10 a.m. final against No. 6 Loyola.
Richmond-Burton 16, Wauconda 0: At Richmond-Burton, the sixth-seeded Rockets won the Class 3A regional semifinal, as Sophie Schwegel pitched a 4-inning no-hitter against the 11th-seeded Bulldogs.
Warren 11, Lake Forest 0: At Mundelein, the top-seeded Blue Devils won the Class 4A regional semifinal in five innings.
Warren (26-2) advances to Saturday's 11 a.m. final against the winner of Thursday's game between No. 8 Mundelein and No. 9 Lake Zurich.
Vernon Hills 13, Northside 2: At Ridgewood, the Cougars cruised in the Class 3A regional semifinal.
No. 5 Vernon Hills (15-18) will play No. 4 Ridgewood in the final at 1 p.m. Saturday.
