Softball: Buffalo Grove, Hoffman, Schaumburg advance to regional semifinals

Freshman Kylie Mainville earned the win and Megan Fontanetta closed out the game on the mound for Buffalo Grove, which advanced to the semifinal of the Class 4A Palatine regional with a 12-2 five-inning win over visiting No. 18 Waukegan on Tuesday.

The Bison (8-16) were led on offense by Sam Hansen (2 doubles), Bailey Williams (5 RBI) and Olivia Morini (3 RBI).

No. 15 seed BG (8-16) will face No. 2 Palatine (24-5) at 4:30 p.m. today.

Hoffman Estates 10, Elgin 0 (6 inn.): Emily Grossi went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI and was also the winning pitcher with a 4-hitter and 9 strikeouts as No. 15 Hoffman (5-17-1) will meet No. 3 Fremd (18-9) in today's 3:30 p.m. regional semifinal at Rolling Meadows.

Other key hitters for Hoffman were Mary Bean (1-for-2, 2 walks, double), Brianna Venegas (1-for-3, 3 RBI), Giselle Velazquez (1-for-2, RBI) and Jenny Camiliere (1-for-2, walk) and Ayanna Ward (RBI).

Schaumburg 15, Larkin 4: Janalee Lyke, Jayme Kissamis and Ashleigh Felde all homered for Schaumburg (3-20) while Talia Torosian added a double in the play-in game of the Saxons' own regional.

Caitlin Bertaud earned the win for the No. 18 Saxons, who will face top-seeded St. Charles East at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Deerfield 2, Wheeling 1: No. 14 Deerfield had only 3 hits - but two were home runs, including a walk-off by Maya Geren with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of the regional play-in game at Deerfield.

Dakota Medrano's 3-hitter included 2 strikeout and the senior also went 3-for-4 at the plate with as double.

Other top hitters for No. 20 Wheeling (0-22) were Emily LaCaeyse (1-for-3, double), Veronica Petzold (1-for-2) and Nikki Ferraro (1-for-4, triple).

Ridgewood 9, St. Viator 4: St. Viator jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning but top-seeded Ridgewood chipped away and eventually put the game away with a 5-run fifth inning. Cece Kaiser had 3 hits for the Lions (6-25), including a 2-run double while Morgan Bielfeldt drove in the other Lions' runs with a 2-run homer.
