Hersey's Fendley joins IBCA Hall of Fame
During the 2016-2017 girls basketball season, Hersey coach Mary Fendley reached a milestone of 400 wins in her 20 seasons directing the program.
On May 5, she reached another milestone.
Fendley was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association hall of fame at a banquet hosted by Illinois State's Redbird Arena.
"I am grateful to so many people along the way," said Fendley, who starred in swimming, basketball and softball at Rolling Meadows High School. "I'm grateful to all the players and their families, to Julia (Barthel, Fendley's assistant all 21 years), all my other assistants, the Hersey staff and my family and friends."
Fendley is one of only 37 other coaches who have won 400 games. She directs one of the most successful programs in the state. The Huskies took third place in the 2010 Class 4A state finals. Fendley's teams have averaged 21 wins.
"She's just a great person and a great coach," said Denver University freshman and former Hersey star senior Claire Gritt following Fendley's 400th win. "She's always there, whether it be for basketball or not related to basketball. I love her for the person she is."
John Novak, Hersey's assistant principal for student activities, paid compliments to Fendley on her historic 400th win.
"It's a great milestone," he said. "Not only is it a tribute to her players but it's a tribute to her program that does it year in and year out. And the thing about Mary is that she produces great kids. She is a role model for them. She is so much more than basketball. That's what makes her so special."
Kipp award
Maine West seniors Allison Pearson and Alisa Fallon are the 2018 recipients of the Derril Kipp Memorial Scholarship.
Kipp is the legendary Warriors hall off fame girls basketball coach who put Maine West girls basketball on the map.
The scholarship award states it is "For your passion to put your whole heart in what you do; your dedication to work hard at every opportunity to improve; and your courage to overcome any setbacks to push forward and continue on the path of success; not just in sports but more important in life."
Men's tennis
Augustana senior Eric Pohl (Fremd) was named the Most Valuable Player of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship. He helped lead the Vikings to their first conference title since 1985, finishing with a 4-1 record during the three-day event.
After an unfinished singles match in the conference quarterfinals, he recorded wins at No. 4 against Carthage in the semifinals and Wheaton in the finals.
He and partner Samuel Totten also won two of three matches at No. 1 doubles, losing only to CCIW Player of the Year Herman Abban and Daniel Moore of Carthage in the semifinals.
Pohl finished the season 14-8 in singles and 15-9 in doubles. He ended up second all-time for the Vikings in doubles wins with a record of 79-39 and added a 56-56 singles ledger to close his career fifth in total victories at 135.
Softball
Wisconsin-Whitewater junior pitcher Julia Camardo (Buffalo Grove) was named to the first team of the of the NCAA Division III All-Great Lakes Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
She helped the Warhawks reach the NCAA Super Regional round as the Warhawks (29-13-1) swept the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles.
Camardo, the 2018 WIAC Pitcher of the Year and a first team All-WIAC honoree, entered the Super Regional with a 14-5 record, a 1.97 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 117 innings. She leads the conference in wins and opposing batting average (.212), and was named the NCAA Whitewater Regional's most outstanding player two weekends ago by pitching the team to two of its three victories.
Camardo is now a two-time all-region pick after being named to the third team in 2016 and, as a first team selection in 2018, is eligible for All-America honors.
• Whitewater advanced to its own NCAA Super Regional round for the first time since 2014 with a 3-2 triumph over Coe (Iowa) in the championship game.
With one out and one on in the top of the seventh and the Warhawks clinging to a 3-1 lead, the Kohawks' Marisa Rep drove a pitch deep to center field.
Leaping at the wall, Warhawks senior center fielder Caitlin Catino (Buffalo Grove) reached over and made a tremendous catch in the webbing of her glove to maintain the Whitewater lead.
• In the first round of the best-of-three Super regional, Whitewater posted a 1-0 victory over 24th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan.
With the game tied at 0-0 entering the seventh inning, Warhawks freshman right fielder Kaiden Jackson (Schaumburg) belted a double to left center and stole third with nobody out. She then scored the winning run on Mallory Klotz' single up the middle.
• For the second-consecutive season, Illinois State sophomore Shannon Felde has been selected to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team.
A two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete first team selection, Felde reached base a team-record a 13 straight games and closed the season on a four-game streak.
She posted 3 multi-RBI and 9 multihit games during 2018 and finished playing all 54 games in the designated player position for the Redbirds.
During the conference tournament, Felde led the way at the plate for the Redbirds, going 4-for-9 (. 444) with an RBI and no strikeouts. Felde finished the season batting .232 with a team-high 30 runs, 4 home runs, 1 triple and 26 walks. The junior owns a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average in marketing.
Ulrich camp
Enrollment is currently taking place for the 29th annual John Ulrich Skills Camps at Immanuel Lutheran in Palatine in June and July.
There is a also a new camp at Saint Peter and Paul in Cary. There are various camps for players entering second grade through 10th grade.
Ulrich was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association hall of fame in 2002 and has more than 40 years of experience coaching junior high and high school girls and boys. Many of his former players have gone on to play in high school, college and the pros or to coach at the junior high, high school, college and pro level.

Cheerleading
Barrington senior Braden Detelich was selected as a member of the Belmont University (Division 1) coed cheerleading squad following tryouts in Nashville, Tenn.
Braden's brother Cole is a sophomore on the Barrington baseball team.
Belmont cheerleaders are widely recognized as one of the premier squads in the conference placing fourth at the 2015 UCA Cheer Division I National Championships and awarded Top Spirit Program in 2016.
The squad is led by former Alabama Crimson Tide cheerleading standout Lindsey Wheeley, who is in her 15th year as head coach of the nationally recognized team.
Braden will receive a financial scholarship from Belmont University as a squad member.
He plans to study audio engineering and entertainment business within the Mike Curb School of Music.
Only 25 students from across the country are selected to participate in the program each year.
Barrington's varsity coed program is coached by former Illinois State University cheerleader Laura Meehan.
Barrington qualified for the IHSA state competition for the 12th straight year, a Barrington High School record for consecutive state qualifying appearances.
"We are so fortunate to have moved from Ohio to such a progressive school system in terms of outstanding academics and a wide variety of athletics," said Braden's dad, Mark Detelich.
Braden is also a four year letterman for Barrington's boys gymnastics and a state qualifier on vault and floor. He was inducted into the Barrington Hall of Fame in 2017 for his gymnastic athletic achievements.
Football
Last month, espn.com reported that the Detroit Lions offensive lineman Emmett Cleary (St. Viator) announced his retirement at the age 27.
Cleary told ESPN he started to realize he was always going to be just the guy fighting for a roster spot and a league-minimum salary. He decided he wanted something more and plans to attend medical school.
The report said Cleary will start medical school at USC in the fall, and for now he's in Chicago working as a research assistant and data analyst studying physical therapy and brain function.
Tucker camp
Barrington boys basketball coach Bryan Tucker is running basketball camps during the month of June for boys entering grades four through eight.
Shooting, fundamentals, skills, one-on-one moves and a variety of contests will be featured.
