Boys tennis: Wheaton Academy wins first sectional since 2005

Wheaton Academy won its second boys tennis sectional and its first since 2005, tying Class 1A sectional host Hinsdale South in the standings with 28 points but earning the title by qualifying all six of its players to five for the Hornets.

Wheaton Academy's Ty Krill and Jacob Williams each advanced to the Class 1A finals, placing third and fourth in singles, respectively, Owen Setran and Graham Shelton finished second in doubles and Devin Greeno and Tristan Hilson placed third.

Glenbard South junior Alex Bergendorf held his top seed at No. 1 singles, defeating No. 2 seed Joris Bizys in the championship match.

Hinsdale South, in its 1A debut, advanced Bizys in singles and the doubles teams of Namit Sambare and Joshua Eisenschenk and Tony Lu and Jacob John.

Class 1A Fenton sectional:

Montini placed third at the sectional but advanced the duo of senior Thomas Batka and sophomore David Batka, who won the doubles title.

Class 2A Proviso West sectional:

Hinsdale Central, which leads the state with 48 trophies and 24 state titles, won the sectional championship by a wide margin, 28-9 over runner-up Benet. The Red Devils' Zach Elliott, sixth in singles in 2017, won the singles title followed by teammate Danny Schmelka.

Last season's state runners-up in doubles, Trevor Hamilton and Andrew Buhelos, won the sectional title ahead of teammates Joe Daw and Ansh Shah.

Glenbard East's Kevin Kruzel and Benet's Ben Lee advanced to the state singles competition, third and fourth place, respectively. Benet's Danny McGuigan and Casey Schrader advanced with a third-place doubles finish as did Downers Grove South's Matt Garcia and Jon Maghirang.
