Boys tennis: Batavia nabs sectional championship

Sophomore Brogan Pierce and junior Chase Bremner placed 1-2 in singles play Saturday to lead Batavia to the team championship at the Class 2A St. Charles North boys tennis sectional.

The Bulldogs had 28 points to win the title. St. Charles North was second with 22.

Also advancing in singles were Streamwood sophomore Alex Veltkamp and Elgin freshman Matthew Sengphommachanh.

St. Charles North went 1-2 in doubles as senior Ajay Gustafson and sophomore Conor Bajuk won the championship. North Stars junior Reed Goldsworth and sophomore Josh Joseph took second place.

Also advancing to state in doubles were the St. Charles East team of juniors Colin Johnson and Zach Moss as well as the Batavia team of seniors Keegan Thompson and Will McClure.

Class 2A at Harlem: The Hampshire doubles team of junior Blake Snider and freshman Abraham Hougland finished third to advance to state. The Whip-Purs finished second as a team with 19 points. Rockford Auburn scored 30 to win the team title.

Class 1A at Boylan: Burlington Central senior Nicola Welker won the singles championship at the Class 1A Boylan sectional. Elgin Academy's doubles team of freshmen Johnny Yavari and Joseph Hargrave finished third to advance to state. Rockford Christian won the team title with 24 points and Elgin Academy was second with 19.
