Boys track and field: Huntley wins sectional title

Huntley seniors Eric Mooney and Ben Litwin are certainly ending their respective track careers on a positive note.

Mooney won the 100 meters in a time of 10.95 and the 200 in a clocking of 22.08 at Friday night's Class 3A Huntley sectional to qualify for next weekend's state meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

"I was just motivated to end my senior year on a good note," said Mooney. "I worked hard and was driven to make it down state in the open races."

Litwin will make his first trek to the state meet with qualifying throws in the discus (third, 162-8) and shot put (fifth, 52-7).

"I didn't throw well in the sectional meet last year and was disappointed I didn't make to the state meet," said Litwin. "I was motivated all season to throw well in the sectionals and make it to state. I am relieved and very happy."

Propelled by Mooney and Litwin, the Red Raiders were the team champions with a total of 123.5 points. Antioch was a distant second with 62 points.

First-place winners for the Red Raiders were Melvin Bonsu (triple jump, 44-10 ½) along with the 800 (1:29.70) and 400 (42.29) relays.

Placing second for Huntley were Josh Guyer (triple jump, 44-9) and Ian Geisler (3200, 9:24.61).

Jacobs placed fourth with a score of 55 points.

First-place winners for the Golden Eagles were Jermaine Maegdlin-Ferguson (110 hurdles, 15.00) and Loren Strickland (long jump, 22-5 ½).

Second-place winners for Jacobs were Tommy Subaric (110 hurdles, 15.08), Ferguson (300 hurdles, 39.32) and the 3,200 relay in 8:01.04.

Crystal Lake South, sixth with 39 points, was led by Jack Becker who won the 3,200 in 9:20.85.

"I ran my race," said Becker. "I didn't go out too fast and had a kick at the end."

Becker also qualified in the 1,600 with a second-place finish in a time of 4:26.47.

Other second-place finishers for the Gators was Zach Borgert (200, 22.44).

The Gators qualified in the 800 relay with a second-place effort in a time of 1:30.57.

The runner-up Sequoits were led by Charlie Smith who won the 1,600 in a time of 4:26.47.

"I knew I had to run a good tactical race, said Smith. "I had faith in my plan."

Second-place efforts for Antioch were Nico Fier (pole vault, 12-6), Chase Becker (discus, 163-10 and Matt Becker (shot put, 53-7 ½).

Grant placed third with a score of 60 points.

The Bulldogs were led by Bobby Cayet who won the 300 hurdles in a time of 38.55.

"I got off to a good start," said Cayet. "I anticipated the hurdles well."

The Bulldogs were 1-2 in the 400 with Jason Thormo finishing first with a time of 49.25 while Michael Smith placed second in a time of 50.65.

Grant won the 1,600 relay in 3:25.83.

Henry Halvorsen was second in the high jump with a jump of 6-2.

The Bulldogs were runner-up in the 400 relay in a time of 42.39.
