Girls soccer: St. Edward advances to 1A sectional final

Behind a hat trick from Rachel Martini, the St. Edward girls soccer team moved on to the Class 1A Johnsburg sectional final after a 5-0 win over Regina Dominican Tuesday.

Madison Knott and Yssa Sto. Domingo also provided goals for the Green Wave (16-5-1), who are back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015.

Maddie Ellsworth totaled 2 assists and Mia Castro and Katie Ellsworth each had 1 for St. Edward, which grabbed the lead in the 15th minute and saw goalie Mariel Franco grab a shutout with 4 saves.

The Wave will play the winner of Wednesday's semifinal between Johnsburg and North Shore Country Day.

St. Charles North 8, Addison Trail 0: Hosting No. 16 Addison Trail, the top-seeded North Stars (18-0-1) cruised in their own regional, scoring 4 goals in the first 9 minutes. All 8 goals came in the first half as Hailey Rydberg and Gia Wahlberg helped North to Friday's regional final. Rydberg totaled 2 goals and 1 assist while Gia Wahlberg led all players with 2 goals and 2 assists. Chloe Netzel had 1 goal and 1 assist while Bella Falco, Claudia Najera and Sami Rydberg also connected on goals. Anna Weyman had 2 assists while C.C. Wahlberg had one. Neither Sara Maleski or Nathalie Grier had to make a save in goal for North, which will take on No. 8 Bartlett Friday at 6 p.m. for the regional title.

St. Charles East 1, Rolling Meadows 0: At the Class 3A Rolling Meadows regional, the No. 4 Saints survived a scare from the host and No. 13 seed Mustangs in semifinal action. The Saints (12-5-6) used a second half goal by Rose Stackhouse to get to Friday's regional championship. Alessia D'Argento provided 1 assist and keeper Grace Griffin's 12th shutout consisted of just 1 save. East will play No. 5 Geneva for a third time this season. Both games this season ended in ties.

Geneva 7, Hoffman Estates 0: The Vikings (12-6-4) made quick work of the Hawks in Rolling Meadows to move on to Friday's big game against St. Charles East. No. 5 Geneva racked up 5 first-half goals and all goals came in the first 46 minutes. Jenna Dominguez notched 4 along with 2 assists while Sydney Gratz had 2 assists. Annalise Spindle had 1 goal and Lauren Albrecht, Oliva Tegge and Ava Geen each had 1 assist. Goalie Katie Montgomery's shutout consisted of 2 saves.

Cary-Grove 1, South Elgin 0: The No. 3 Trojans (11-2-2) advanced to Friday's Class 3A Dundee-Crown regional final with a slim victory over the No. 14 Storm. Maggie Mason provided the game's only goal on an assist from Kelly Stayart. Cary-Grove awaits Wednesday's winner of No. 5 Dundee-Crown vs. No. 11 Harlem.

Other regional winners: No. 3 Batavia defeated No. 15 Glenbard North 5-1. The Bulldogs (14-3-2) will meet host No. 6 Conant Friday at 4 p.m. for the regional title. No. 6 Larkin defeated No. 12 Grant 7-0 to take on host No. 4 DeKalb Friday at 6 p.m. The Barbs eliminated No. 13 Streamwood 3-0.
