Baseball: Joyce, Coen combine on shutout for Rolling Meadows
Rolling Meadows starter Luke Joyce and reliever Joe Coen combined on a shutout as the host Mustangs blanked Fremd 4-0 on Saturday in Mid-Suburban League play.
Joyce worked 6⅓ innings and struck out five while allowing 7 hits. Coen retired both the batters he faced.
Nate Pardini and Jack Kane had 2 hits apiece for Rolling Meadows (10-12-1, 8-7), which got 2 RBI from Angelo Shands and 1 from Joe Marcucci.
Alex Baraban had the only extra-base hit for Fremd (13-11, 7-8), a double.
Lockport 4, Elk Grove 0: Three Lockport pitchers limited the Grens (8-16-1) to 1 hit, a single by Nick Hofmann, in a nonconference matchup. Colin Woulfe had the key hit for Lockport, a 3-run double in the second inning.
St. Viator 7, Buffalo Grove 1: The host Lions broke a tied game wide open with a 6-run rally in the sixth inning for a nonconference win.
Two swings of the bat accounted for those 6 runs - a 2-run homer by Bryce Hellgeth, and later a grand slam by Casey Pulikowski.
Hunter Johnson and Pulikowski both had a pair of hits, and Johnson scored twice.
Jack Mahoney took command on the mound for St. Viator (16-13), tossing a complete game 2-hitter.
Mac Camardo doubled and Riley Rundquist had a single for Buffalo Grove (23-5).
Niles West 6, Maine West 4: The host Warriors rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh yet came up short despite out-hitting Niles West 13-8 in Central Suburban North action.
Matt Johnston finished 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Maine West (9-13), while Jacob Cabral had 3 hits and Cory Scholler, David Roscoe had 2 apiece.
Hersey 6, Dundee-Crown 4: The visiting Huskies built a big lead, and it turned out they needed it as the host Chargers came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh of their nonconference contest.
Cristian Rodriguez doubled and finished 3-for-3 with 3 RBI to lead the way for Hersey (12-17-1). Hunter Luke had a pair of hits and Daniel Clawson contributed an RBI double.
Brian Massaccesi lasted 6 innings and got the win, and Rodriguez got the last three outs to earn a save.
Stevenson 7, Palatine 2: Ryan McElhinny finished 3-for-4, Caleb Evans was 2-for-4 and both had 2 RBI to help the visiting Patriots win a nonconference matchup.
Hayden Brotz started and pitching through the fourth inning for Stevenson, which got three scoreless 1-inning stints from relievers.
TJ Skelnik drove in both runs for Palatine (18-12), which got doubles from Matthew Helms and Jake Andersen.
